America's Fittest and Fattest Colleges in America 2005
Editorial Content by Nate Millado; Research Conducted by The Princeton Review

it's 1:37 a.m. Thursday. Holed up in his dorm room, a studious Ivy Leaguer burns the midnight oil, cramming for a physics final while snacking on cold pizza washed down with a gigantic Coke, hoping the sugar and ca.eine will do the trick. Somewhere across campus, a frat jock finds himself on the receiving end of a beer funnel, guzzling gallons of Natty Light. Both represent the current state of the student union: an ever-expanding collective gut, evident at almost all of the nation's universities.

These years are about debauchery as much as they are about learning and excelling. However, as our country gets fatter, what was once the great rite of passage for young people has only intensified an epidemic in America, as the post college years have not seen a return to better living once the party is over.

But who's winning the war? Which colleges and universities are helping their students keep their weight under control? Which student bodies are working hardest to maintain their health and fitness, and which ones are letting everything go, piling on pound after pound?

In our first report on the health of America's college campuses, we partnered with the Princeton Review, one of America's premier research organizations and an expert on tracking the fickle interests and habits of college students. Together, we surveyed nearly 10,000 students from more than 660 of the nation's top colleges and universities, asking them everything from the personal ("How many pounds have you gained or lost since you started going to school?" "How often do you work out?") to their thoughts on the big-picture issues ("How would you rate the fitness facilities on your campus?" "Does your school appear to care about how fit you are?").

Surveys complete, we spent the summer poring over the data, crunching numbers and clicking through spreadsheets until we came up with the following list of the 20 fittest and 20 fattest colleges in America, as determined by the people who would know best-the students attending the schools.

Reader Comments:

Your list says the top 25 colleges, but there are only twenty listed. Also, what about the University of Oregon? I've never seen a campus so devoted to maintaining a student's healthy lifestyle.
-- lindsey

I see SUNY Brockport is on your list as one of the fattest colleges, which is odd. SUNY Brockport has both physical education and health education as majors and the chairman of the health department there was a very prominent figure in NY for health education. SUNY Brockport needs to kick it up a notch and get off that list.
-- Marciano

Where does American University in Washington, DC rank? It has great atheletic facilities and fabulous food choices?

This ranking is a teriffic idea.
-- Louis Goodman

Did you guys consider the military academies of the country?
-- Rena Hall

I find it difficult to believe that military colleges didn't make it on the list. Given that the majority have at least semi-annual physical fitness assessments for the entire student body, and that most also require all students to take a physical education class every year for their four years, it would seem that they would be among the most fit. In addition, all have physical fitness standards (body fat percentage, phyiscal assessment scores) that not only factor into a student's GPA, but also may be grounds for expulsion for underperforming students.

I realize many don't group service academies (U.S. Naval Academy, Air Force Academy, Military Academy, Coast Guard Academy) with traditional colleges, but the fact is - they are 4 year colleges, and their students are certainly among the most fit in the world.
-- Jason

Where does Pepperdine University rank?
-- Kristian

Yeha... I agree with Lindsey... GO DUCKS, baby!!! WOOHOO
-- Ryan

Virginia Military Institute & The Citadel - every cadet takes a mandatory physical fitness test every semester.
-- Tom

As a current student at UC Davis, I am proud to see we are listed at number thirteen. This campus strongly supports fitness among its students by incouraging the use of bicycles as a viable form of transportation.I would estimate that 80% of the student population rides a bicycle at least once a day. Great job by the city and university.
-- adam

I was hoping to see KU (Kansas University) on the list. I heard they don't require PE because the students get so much exercise getting around the beautiful campus by bike or on foot....it's full of hills and beautiful scenery.......
-- Denise

What about the military academies? (USMA, West Point, USNA, Annapolis, USAFA, Colorado Springs, USMMA, King's Point, and USCGA Academy)
-- Eric

Yea, UC Santa Barbara (#2 Fittest)! I'm glad those beach girls and guys are still as active as they were when I was there in the late 70s!
-- Darla

Did you check into Oral Roberts University? They have an aerobic exercise and fat percentage testing every semester! You cannot graduate without completing the physical ed classes! I know that I was in no better shape after graduating there!
-- Sally

What about University of the pacific in stockton california?
They are way more fit thatn any other college.

-- aUdReY

I agree with Jason, you should have included the Academies in your survey. As a group they are definitely at the top and also teach fitness as a lifestyle.
-- Bob

Agreed.

It says Top 25... But only 20 are listed. And I haven't even been to college...
-- Chris

Whu would they add any military colleges. It's only
obvious that most of the student body would be fit.

-- Liz

I don't remember what time it was when I left my dorm room to go to the bathroom when I saw my neighbor throwing up between the stairwells from the 2nd floor. (God Bless the cleaning lady.).
Nor the time discovered a passed out student lying naked in the shower seated in a chair, oblivious to everything. (He pissed his roomate off by puking from the upper bunk!)

-- mad

I believe that the University of California, Los Angeles shoulld also be on the top 25 list. I am a student there and it is evident that other students take great pride in their physical fitness, come on it's L.A.
-- Vanessa C.

"The" University of Texas is in Austin, Texas...not Dallas
-- MJ Morris

Woo I was really happy about seeing this list cause I'm actually a student at Northwestern University... I'm so glad to see that the school also cares alot about the health of its students.
-- Andrea Barrios

Hummm, does anybody care which college has the smartest students? Isn't that why their there?
-- Darnelle

just came out
-- Dad

Many may not have heard of this university as it's newly accredited, but Soka University in Aliso Viejo also deserved serious consideration for being a part of this study.
-- Akriti

is 5.5 inches small? what do u think ladies.
-- john

Agree with Rena and Jason. I'm a USNA grad and I think I can speak for many who will agree that the Service Academies have by percentage of student body, the highest number of "fit" students. I knew of classmates who were separated because the couldn't get weight down nor pass physicial fitness tests held every semester, so the "incentive" is there to be in shape. I don't know if other colleges/universities have a policy like that. All students are involved in daily ECAs most of which are sport related and also work out on their own above and beyond that. All these facts should at least be mentioned in the article to be fair.
-- Academy Grad

I agree with Jason. Excluding or ignoring the service academies makes your report incredible.
-- Jim

What about the military academies? And University of Hawaii?
-- Jimmy B

who cares about this list

-fat albert
-- yo daddy

Wow i never realized that I was in such great shape. But as a California State University Long Beach student I am apparently in the top 20! Go 49ers!!
-- Steve

With the amount of walking up and down hills at UCLA, which creates a student population of virtually no fat people, I can't imagine why it did not make the "fit" list.
-- Mitchell

Was Springfield College (Springfield, MA) considered? Springfield, where basketball was invented, has a preponderance of students taking physical education and allied sciences. All students are encouraged to participate in athletics through varsity sports or intramurals. The food service seems to offer a variety of healthy options.
-- Bob Hoffman

What about a more complete list of your "more than 660" to see where other colleges fall???

-- John Miko

I agree with Jason,
The Academies should be number one on the fittest list.
-- Tim

Your list of fit schools. What is the critera? It sounds like it is based on how much the school is doing. What about campus's like Cal State Fullerton which is mostly a commuter school? Does this effect the numbers? What about schools that have fit students without the school getting involved?
-- Theresa

Purdue University is the most fit college campus in the country. Every time I visit I see people running and exercising. Even drinking at Harry's is exercise, lifting that beer can repeatedly gets tiring after a while.
-- Will

On which list does Columbia, Harvard, Princeton and Yale appear, and where do they rank?
-- Cleophus Neptune

What about USMA, USNA, USAFA, Virginia Military Institute, and the Citadel? Come on! Tthey surely would make any exhausive list of this subject. These four year schools have daily exercise requirements to meet, and they have to eat in mess halls.
-- Jared

Next time call you fattest column your biggest party schools. I know for a fact Southern Illinois University Carbondale is a huge party school and there ranked 4 on your list. I can only imagine what the other 19 are like. Also where are the other 5 schools on your lists.
-- Tim

I would be interested in all the questions that were asked to determine level of fitness?
-- Ken Katt

Once again this list is way off. The 5 Federal Academies by far have the fittest student population. Merchant Marine, Navy Army, Coast Guard and West Point students by far MUST be the fittest.

-- KP Mariner

This stuff is nice to know but theyre not elemantary school kids, they eat what they want and excersize if they want. I notice a lot of "fat" universitys are on the south/east. Although it may be true, its still not right, because what is fat to one persone might not be to anoth. So what im saying is, the black population is more dense in the south, and not all of them want to look like barbie (trust me I know, I am black) They arent fat or skinny, they have curves, thats just the way theyre built. Also the military schools should have thier own list of fit and fat, because if they were on this list, we know theyd take all the fit spots. maybe a top ten fit and fat list.
-- Angela

What I find funny is that the most fit school is the Mormon school. Guess you have to be skinny to fit in "holly" underware.
-- Peter

I have to agree with everyone who has commented that the service academies and military schools such as The Citadel, VMI, Norwich, etc have been grossly overlooked.

The military has a culture of fitness. In fact, had they counted the service and para-military schools the top of the list would be dominated by them.

Would have been an interesting study unto itself...which of "us" is the fittest!

GO NAVY...BEAT ARMY!
-- USNA '96

TO MJ MORRIS
There is an University of Texas in Dallas, there is also one in Arlington, Texas. Expand your horizons moron.
-- D

This information is nice to know, but what is this data based on?

-- Jim

I can see why UCSB is #2, go gauchos! We are also on the top list of party schools in the nation and still are able to end up #2 of the fittest colleges. the questions that were asked is how the students rate the fitness and the easily accessible exercise. Like Davis, Ucsb encourages biking. I probably rode my bike 6 times a day to anywhere, and walked to go eat. becoming fit there is so readily available. Oh and Ucsb is also one of the top schools in the nation, known for producing Nobel Prize winners in the last few years in multiple subjects. a healthy happy body produces a health happy mind.
-- Jenn B

Lets see. 10000 students. 660 colleges. Thats around 15 students per college. Accurate?
-- Anonymous

GO BEACH!!!!
-- joel

Notice how most of the fat colleges are in the South?
-- Mark

i hope to be going to one of the schools above or U.C.L.A. cuz i play volleyball, softball, and basketball heck-a-good well i am gonna gonna go to ridgeview in three years i am in seventh grade so come check me out my years of high school i graduate in 2012 dont for get well my name isn't elayna but i don't want my name on the internet
-- elayna

I'm actually doing a speech next week on obesity, and I'm from the 4th fattest school. Thanks for the kicker!
-- Tim S.

Third Time is a charm

-- Jenn B AKA dumbass

It doesnt surprise me the my college is actually on the list for the one of the fattest colleges because its in beauiful south with its great soul food
-- Lynn

It kinda surprises me I'm from the 6th fattest school thats got many hills and parking thats horrible and food I was glad to finally to not have to eat anymore
-- Beth

No service academies?? Hands down the most fit student body in the nation
-- Zach

I am so proud that 4 of the fittest schools are in California, while none of the fattest are in my state! Of course maybe that just means that we are overly obsessed with out appearance, but I'm gonna ignore that possibility and focus on the positive! Like I've always said, Cali IS the shit.

~Cali pride!
-- Lindsay

I sure helped MY college to become fatter, after changing MY abs into that soft lazy fast-food belly tahts i've got now.
-- T. A. ohhyeh@gmail.com

There is no way College of Charleston made the list and the Citadel did not. I am a Citadel student and I personally know that they are a bunch of lazy bums.
-- Chase H.

So why does someone always have to make every issue and issue between white and black? Angela, my guess as to why the majority of the "fat" school are in the south is because of the food associated with the culture, and their attitude towards health and fitness. Fried this and buttery that....its just how it is. And yes the majority of black WOMEN tends to be curvier, and the majority of the black population resides in the south. But guess what - California is largely made up by hispanics, who generally tend to have curvier figures, yet not one school on the fat list is from CA. And 4 on the fit list are in CA, so I think it is more a matter of culture than race. Plus many students come from out of state, so college populations may not exactly reflect that of its state. Anyways, point being, why is everything about black and white?
-- Lindsay

What about Saint. Joe's in PA? They have many options for being fit. THE HAWK WILL NEVER DIE!
-- Bob

The service academies should definitely be the top spots on this list. No other college in the country will kick you out for not being physically fit or mandates that you participate in atleast an intramural sport, if not a varsity sport, all year. I'd put a group of midshipmen or cadets up against a group from any other school any day.
-- S.R.

I agree with a lot of people on here, where are the military academies? They should all be in the top 4, their physical requirement I would think would be much more demanding than any of the other colleges listed.
-- Dorothy

hay Mj Morris

As a student of the university of Texas San Antonio i feal that u should know that the UT system has independent sites all over the state not just in Austin
-- jess

Can we put in America's dumbest colleges and smartest colleges as well? Anything to sell more magazines! We're #1!! or We're last!!
-- Jesse

I'm just glad Georgia State University isn't on the 'fattest' list!
-- Joshua

I agree with the list, but what about the University of Georgia?! The Ramsey Center for Physical Fitnes at UGA is huge- 3 stories tall, with three pools, a diving well, a gymnastics studio, three weight rooms... and about a few thousands guys addicted to weightlifting and girls with eating disorders. The place is fit-crazed. For good and bad reasons.
-- UGAnna

No Johns Hopkins? 25% of the entire student body plays a varsity sport. And have you seen the water polo team in their speedos? Talk about fit.
-- K-Ger

Go Gauchos!!! As a 2000 UC Santa Barbara graduate, I'm so proud to see that we made #2 Fittest College. It helps that everyone pretty much rides thier beach cruisers to class or wherever in Isla Vista! Good Times.
-- Kat

Where does Ohio Wesleyan University rank?
-- ohioguy

I like this category better than best party schools for a reason to pick a degree. Thats practically a extra curricular credit people should inquire on at all colleges. Third inquiry for University of Oregon , GO Ducks XC /Track .. and first wave inquiry for East Stroudsburg University Warriors?
-- nexus

to graduate from my school i had to jog 15 miles a week and do aerobic exercises....they should make this a requirement for all universities.....
-- steven from tulsa

wow that makes me feel great, I go to the number 7 fattest school in the country... E-M-U- KNOW!!!
-- Georgia

Look at it this way fellas, if you go to one of the "fat" schools and you are in good shape, you stand out more. (more pooty-tang)
-- -ColoState

Its hard to believe WSU is fatter then UWP...twinkie time!
-- FatWSUStudent

EVERYONE LOVES THEIR JUNK FOOD TO A LIMIT SLOW DOWN.
-- NINJA

Cant beat UCSB, 2nd fittest, #4 party school, top #12 public academics. As someone who minored in nutritional sciences in SB, i can say that we are a very very fit school!!! Gauchos 06 baby!
-- RoonDogg

Brigham Young university is more related to culture than to fitness, just go on campus and take a look. Keep in mind that Utah is a place where milk is no longer a beverage but considared a food
-- T ByU

To leave out the Federal and State Military colleges is akin to leaving The Rolling Stones off a greatest rock list.

To suggest that any of the schools on your top 20 list can hold a candle to the military colleges is down right laughable. I am a 2004 Citadel Alumni and I'll speak of my own experience but I'm sure my brethren at the other fine institutions will have very similar stories.

PT (Physical training for you non military types) was conducted every Tuesday and Thursday morning at 0600.

PT tests were giving multiple times per semester and seniors are required to pass in order to graduate.

If you failed a PT test you were put in a remedial PT platoon in order to PT every day until you could pass the PT test.

If you cannot pass the PT test you are restricted to campus and have no leave until you do pass.

As a cadre platoon Sgt. (responsible for the military indoctrination of the entering 4th class) I had an attrition rate of close to %30 in the first month. About half of those left because they couldn't handle the physical requirements of the 4th class system.

The more I think of it, the more I think you were right to leave us off this list. It simply wouldn't be fair to the rest of the schools in the country. We are simply in a league of our own.

-- Rob

I think being fit and healthy is something that needs to be taught to kindergarden students - college.

-- derrick

I have been a student at UNCG (6th fattest) and William and Mary (17th fittest) and I'd say that's pretty accurate, at least overall. WM definitely has more options for food, and its fitness center is easier to access and there are more sports, both team and club, so it's easy to get involved in them. Although WM is way more stressful and I end up getting less sleep here, which is rather unhealthy!
-- Amanda

When I first read this I was in disbelief that the University of Oregon was not ranked, while the much smaller in comparison Portland State University was. The University of Oregon makes every effort to encourage students to exercise, eat healthy and venture into the great outdoors. GO DUCKS!
