Ask the Strongman: High-intensity cardio

Q: Do you ever do cardio workouts?
A: I come from a powerlifting background, where you run only to get food. So I was lacking in this area when I switched to Strongman competitions. Trust me when I say the cardiovascular demands for Strongman events are as taxing as they are in any sport. If you're not properly conditioned, you might as well plan
on puking.
Now I do a high-intensity cardio workout 2-3 times a week. I like interval sprints because they're less taxing on my legs and don't seem to affect my strength training. I do them around a football field. I sprint at about three-quarters speed for 80 yards, then walk across the field for recovery. When I reach the other side, I sprint again, repeating until I've completed five laps around the field. I also do some machine cardio during the winter to fight fat. Around Christmas, I'll gain 10 pounds, easy.
