Increase Your Bench

| Print Page | Email to Friend

As much as you like the bench press, the bench press doesn't like you. It's a tough lift that requires total concentration, and it will crush your dreams of a new max (if not your rib cage) if there's any weakness in your setup or flaw in your form. The solution: Show that bar who's boss-and squeeze the life out of it. Try the following technique from Jim Wendler, an elite powerlifter from London, Ohio, who used it to reach his personal best bench of 675 pounds.

HERE'S WHAT YOU DO
Lie down on the bench, but before you lift the bar off the rack, squeeze it as hard as you can for three to five seconds. Relax, and let go of the bar for another three to five seconds. Now grip it again and begin your new max attempt.

As simple as it is, the squeeze has many benefits. "Many people have trouble staying tight when they lift," says Wendler. "By squeezing the bar beforehand, your arms, chest, lats, legs, and glutes will tense up -- and that needs to happen when you have a heavy weight over your chest." In fact, if you don't feel those muscles fire, says Wendler, repeat the squeeze and channel your focus until you do.

In addition to preparing you for the feel of a heavy bench press, the bar squeeze also dials in your central nervous system to the amount of muscle recruitment you'll need to complete the lift. "Squeezing hard essentially overloads your system, albeit very briefly and safely -- so when you take the bar off the rack and begin to press, your nervous system will feel like it's already handled a heavy load, and it's not so intimidated by the one you've got on the bar." The result: You'll psych out one of the meanest lifts in your workout -- and score a new max in the process.

What is the best way to get a six pack the quickest, with the best results? I've tried all the other routines, and nothing gives my abs the burn I feel I need. Any suggestions?
-- Nick

Nick

The only way to get a six pack is to do cardio!
In the morning on an empty stomach to burn off stored fat. Doing your cardio after a meal (mid-day or evening) will just burn off what you ate.

-- Steven

in this months issue you have a 40 minute cerdio workout that works in intervals, it didn't mention at what incline???

i'm in pretty good shape but i have this pooch right underneath my belly button that i'd like to get rid of, what's the best way?
-- brandon

i tried this while trying to find my one rep max bench and it didnt work. i have tried loading my mucles with a weight heavier htan i can lift and then getting some1 to help it up, after that u do a bit above ur normal max and u will easily do it, apparently all the tension builds up and get ur muscles ready for a lot of effort thinkin they will do what they just did it recruits as much energy asd possible in to that movement,

-- David Garrick

All those comments for ppl who want to gain mass...eat lean meats, a lot of them!!!!
-- ben R

this technique may increase your bench but not by any sizeable amount. to increase your bench, you have to constantly increase the weights you lift for low reps, also train for muscle endurance by doing lighter weights and high reps occasionally. Then, ensure that you are training the main supporting muscle groups of triceps and shoulders along with the rest of the body where you get your strength from like the lats, the legs etc. A balanced overall body routine ensures that you are stronger overall which leads to a bigger bench, squat, deadlift etc.
That's the ''GOSPEL" on getting a bigger bench.
-- roland

I havent tried any of these workouts yet. But i hopt they help me out

Never a person can't do exercises on the morning with the stomach empty. It's a mistake. The person can eat a snack like a bar of kellog's,fruit,a glass of juice or water of 4 thru 6 onces at least 20 minutes before running. If a person wants to better his abs can do 40 minutes of cardio before the abs. This is because the person burns thr firts 20 minutes the carbohidrates and the next 20 minutes the fat. The person can starts for 50% of intensity for the cardio training thru 65% of intensity through the time and one hour of cardio and do the cardio 3 times per week starting and finally 5 times per week.

There is no true way to workout every body is different. Hence so many workouts. You can't spot loose either you want to loose the gut you will only loose surrounding body fat. I am 20 years old and I am naturallly about 140 pounds. I have been weight training for about 7 weeks and I am at 155. I am trying to sculpt my abs. I am afraid to do any cardio because I do not want to lose weight. Is it still good for me to do cardio.
Thanks for the help
-- Dan

For Dan:
in order for you to maintain weight and do cardio, you'll have to take in more calories, so you can burn them off, but not lose weight.
-- Drazen

I am 32 years old, 6 foot 3 and weigh 210, i do not now nor have i ever had a six-pack, nor do i care if i ever have one, you guys should stop trying so hard to get one, it is perfectly normal for a grown man to have a layer of water and fat over his abs, relax and have fun in the gym

All i want to know is how i can build myself up a bit and try to lose a bit of my gut

My name is Jose I've been working out for about 3 weeks now, i weighed about 154 and im at 180 now gained muscle and endourance, my advice for the people trying to get abs is this, get the 6-8 pound medicine ball and elevate your legs in the air with no support, and bend up to do a crunch and swing the medicine ball to your left and right, do that about 10-15 times, then do a 1 legged sit-up keep one leg on the ground like normal 90 degree angle and the other one match it to your knee extend it in the air, come up as you were doing a sit up and with the opposite elbow twist to the oppiste knew I.E. Right Elbow / Left Knee, do that about 10 times, and after you do those 2 excersizes, lay on your stomach as if you were about to do a push-up, then arch your back streching your abs, do this about 3-4 times during a workout, and as far as cardio, do the elypticle, its zero impact and for myself who now i have flat feet its great do that for about 30 minutes after an ab workout up hills build your endourance as well as burining your fat around ur stomach..if you need some more advice this is my email FSRUMBA@yahoo.com the key to those workouts is you gotta do them. ;)
-- Jose Z.

What is up with comments like 'idiot' or 'the ONLY way to get abs is to...' Every one of us are different, just because a workout may not be right for you it does not mean that it will not work for someone else.
-- Simon

if you want a 6 pack, its simple but hard work....

run or other hard cardio for 30 mins at least 3-5 times a week. while finishing the session with different forms of ab exercises. you have to lose the fat to get a six pack. eat correctly, not too many carbs except after working out, lots of protein, fruit shit like that. dont eat junk. eat regulary 5 times a day, scrambled egg on brown bread is a good snack. good luck
-- Anonymous

I'm 18 5'7" about 140, in highschool my freshman year i could barely do 160 but over the summer i did about 20 push ups a day, then i did bench three times a week for 1/2 hour i did a different workout each time, burn outs, pyramids, and 21's i also found a way to do wide spread pull ups everyday to workout my back i did gain a little weight i ended up weighing around 150 but i could bench 310
-- Kevin

Hi, I am a 18 year old male and I am trying to gain muscle but also stay agile using a good 4-5 day program...if anyone has a routine that works can you let me know at kual999@yahoo.com
-- Ken

I think some people here might be misguided. You simply cannot add 15-30 pounds of muscle in a month as some of you have suggested, ask any health expert. I work out 3 hours a day, 6 days a week. You must be logical in your thinking. Now I'm not saying you can't add a lot of weight in a month but it won't be muscle mass like some of you are saying. At 3 hours a day and 6 days a week it takes usually a good 2-3 months to add 10 pounds of muscle. For those that say they can't lose that "pouch" just below your belly button...thats all about your diet, it doesnt matter how many ab excersizes you do if you dont follow a strict diet, you will always have that pouch. It may sound too simple, but if you want to drop weight then simply burn more calories then you take in every day. Cut out sugars and a lot of unnecessary fats and replace these with lots of protein. Tuna is the perfect high protein low fat food.

hi my name is josh weissenfluh im 17 years old and i can bench 245 and i weigh 147 anouther technique to use is the bounce technique this is were u bounce the weight off your chest not to hard though you drive the weight off your chest better
-- JOSH WEISSENFLUH

Josh: You shouldnt bouce weight off your chest. That is terrible form. Try drop sets on every now and then instead.

Jose: You have been working out for 3 whole weeks huh. First to gain 15 pounds of muscle is impossible. In a year you can gain maybe 8 pounds of muscle. You dont knwo what youare talking about so dont give out advice.

hi my name is luke. i am 6 foot and i weigh 190. i am 17 years old. i am trying to improve my bench as well as my muscle mss, but i also need to keep my 6 pack. my bench is at 295 but i would like to get up to about 325 to 350. FAST.. what is the best way to gain mass while improving strength without gaining an excessive amount of weight? someone help! my e-mail is gettinby06@yahoo.com. thanks -luke
-- luke

To you guys using the powdered stuff and can't figure out why you can't lose weight: stop using the powdered stuff. Losing weight is all about calories taken in vs. calories burned. Check your daily intake of calories and compare it to calories burned during the day and during workouts. Get with a nutritionist that actually knows what they are doing, not some idiot at the gym or some infomercial.

-- Anonymous

oh yeah and for people that keep asking how to get stronger or gain muslce mass the quickest way YOU JUST GOT TO WORK HARD!!! don't think about how quick your gonna be stronger just keep lifting properly and efficently
DUH!

the best way to get stronger is to hunt down a nigger or two every night. it is hard work because they are hard to see and very fast. just make sure to beat him when you catch him otherwise they will try and run again.
-- bob

hi im 17 years..225pounds..and a junior in high school. i just started lifting weights again after a year and a couple months off from football and weight... my freshman year i was benching 275 and squating 385 for my max...... well after my time off my bench droped to 260 and my squat stood the same......well ive been liftin for about 4 or 5 months....4 times a week.... now my max is 325 for bench and 475 squat......the only way your going to increse ur max is by spending time in the weight room and changing your routines and reps you do.....the more muscles you work out.....the better chance you have of reaching your goals...... my max increased alot because some people ar naturally srong...like me....so dont expect for you max to increase very fast.....its going to take time and hard work
-- john

how do you know when to but more weight on when you are benching
-- Anonymous

for the people trying to bouil ur bench fast...why not keep going the way ur going and add a few more pounds every week or two, and bouncing the bar off ur chest can crack ur chest cavity would not try it myself now

-- Tyler Cashion

Im 16 years old, 6 ft, 180lbs, right now i am benching 170lbs, do you have any suggestions on how i can increase my bench since i seem to be on a plateau + would you suggest that i take creatine? davidbell15000@msn.com
-- Dave Bell

Guys this works great, especially for you Dave. Five sets of five at your theoretical max with 60 seconds in between sets. Then a super set of 12 at your theoretical max. After that 3 sets of 8 on an incline bench with dumbbells, and you should barely be able to finish the last set. Do this routine Monday Wednesday Friday. The next week you should have added at least five pounds to your bench. I've been on this program that I got through my football strength trainer for 6 weeks. I started at 175lbs 5 times and now I'm at 200lbs repped out to perfection 5 times. It's awesome try it out. Also only move on to more weight on the bench if you can complete all five sets with very minimal help in the last rep of the last set.
-- -ian

hey, im a 14 year old football player goin into sophmore year, and my coach set a bench press max goal of 200 lbs. for me. right now im at 190 and i was wondering if i could get a tip on how to increase my max within a few weaks. im shooting for about 230. thanks

rebelwarriorz4lyfe@hotmail.com
-- anthony

Anthony: you should eat a ton of good food like potatoes and chicken and protein shakes and stuff that has a lot of calories and has good protein and carbs. also drink a lot of water. about a gallon a day probably thats what i try to do. and as for your workout make sure you do at least like 9 to 12 sets of diffrent chest exercises. i dont know what your workout is like but if you are doing chest any more than two days a week than you are probably overtraining, especially if you are first starting out. make sure you get at least seventy two hours of rest between muscle groups so they recover completley. if they dont recover then they dont get stronger. for your reps you should aim low like four to six of heavy weight.

MY CHEST IS WEAK... I m regualar n doing proper bench ... but still my chest muscles is not growing..

Hey im 15 years old. 98 pounds.5'6.And i want to get strong i do work out at a fitness center i lift about 25-30 pounds on machine muscle workout and somtimes more but in free weights i cant go above 20 can you give me some tips
-- Chuchi

train hard plus use supplements nitro tech is the best way to go made by muscle tech
-- Anonymous

Dg - If you are trying to gain muscle mass, try lifting heavy weights at few reps but multiple sets. Also make sure that as you are doing this you are having a lot of protein in your diet because that is what is used to repair and build your muscles. -DC
-- Anonymous

some of the people on here don't know what there talking about. like you the john guy, don't be giving advice if you're "naturally strong" cuz you don't know how to help someone who isn't. and the idiots talking about gaining over 10 pounds of muscle in a month, that's physically impossible. i'm sorry to tell you but what you got was fat. the boy talking about bouncing the bar, you're probably gonna die after breaking your rib cage and who cares what some of y'all bench. for the football players, yes lifting is important but the stremgth you need comes from cardio, quickness, and endurance training. train your entire body to work together and let your coaches worry about your maxes. i play d-end and i promise my theory works even for a lineman.
