Stick It to Your Abs

You always put abs at the end of your workout, yet you're surprised when, by that time, it's difficult to find a free decline bench or Swiss ball to do your crunches. Now you're left with that open spot on the floor (you guessed it-right behind that water buffalo on the treadmill). But don't take it as an invitation to knock out a sloppy set of 20 and go home-you can still stick it to your abs with this unique move.

HERE'S WHAT YOU DO
Grab a light barbell, pipe, or broomstick and lie on your back on the floor. Raise your thighs in the air, perpendicular to the ground, and bend your knees 90 degrees. Hold the bar directly above you with both hands, so that it's higher than your knees [1]. Now tuck your chin to your chest and, keeping your arms straight, slowly try to pull your spine off the floor one vertebra at a time-the goal is to crunch up into a ball so that the bar passes over your feet [2]. That's one rep. Do one to two sets of six to eight reps, resting 30-60 seconds between sets. If you can't get the bar past your feet, your internal obliques are weak-crunch as far as you can for now and continue using this exercise until you can.

THE STICK CRUNCH
Most crunches done on the floor hurt your back more than they work your abs-often because people tilt their chins up in the air as they rise off the floor. But this version (call it the "stick crunch") forces you to keep your head in a neutral position as you activate your deepest abdominal muscles to pull you up. As a result, it's safer for your spine, and it's one of the most effective moves for correcting weaknesses in your abs-even if your abs are only an afterthought.

you could try hanging knee tucks where you hang from a pullup bar and bring your knees to your chest, or try the captains chair which is a similar concept

Hey im goin 2 try this workout for my HPE Assignment.

im 14 and weight 137 at 6 foot 1. Im pretty fit, I plan to build some muscle. I currently run/bike 3 times a week do pushups and crunches/sit ups everyday and lift, but somethin is bothering me. My butt is a bit large. I know that for my height this weight is goo, but i would like to know how i could turn that into muscle and lose some of that flab.

Just do bicycle crunches. They are the best exercise for your abs, we had to do them in soccer. Do 25 in the morning when you wake up, and 25 at night. When you feel that you can do them with ease, just increase the amount to 100, and in about a month you will see a difference.

i am starting MMA and i am trying to get iron abs, so i can take a large number of punches to the mid section. i hope this helps me get them. i will post another comment a few months from now to let ya know how its going.

I've been going to the gym everyday for about a yr and a half. My workout consists of a couple miles a day and weight traning. By the time I'm done I'm soaking of sweat. I still havn't been able to lose this gut. Any suggestions?

Suggestions on how to lose your gut: Maintain a caloric deficit in your daily diet. Eat High protein, moderate fat and low carbs. Eat carbs in the morning and not in the evening. No need to do too much cardio, you'll only burn muscle. Lift heavy weights. Do squats, deadlifts and bench press. If that doenst get you there nothing will.

I thought that you had to use the cardio to lose weight in the gut before all of the crunches should start. was I wrong in thinking this?

hey jeff...squat for 4 sets of ten reps twice a week to build muscle in your butt and burn the fat
