Test Drive: Hyundai Veloster Turbo

We’ve yet to see an alien spacecraft, but we’re fairly certain it would look like Hyundai’s otherworldly Veloster. First of all, it’s asymmetrical. On the driver’s side there’s one door, on the passenger side there are two doors. Inside, the driver faces an instrument panel so laden with technology that you might suspect aliens were involved in its design. Every surface inside and out looks to have been carved, etched, or scalloped to distinguish the Veloster from other cars. And yet, for all the weirdness, the look is sporty and appealing. Up until the arrival of the Turbo, the Veloster’s styling promised sportiness that it couldn’t quite deliver. Not anymore.
Adding a turbocharger to the Veloster adds 63 horses. The Veloster Turbo, with 201 horsepower and 195 poundfeet on tap, is quick off the line and blasts from 0 to 60 in 7.5 seconds. A six-speed manual is standard, and a quick-shifting six-speed automatic with paddle shifters is optional. Compact and relatively light, the Veloster remains a nimble and athletic ride.
While the Veloster Turbo has power and looks, it’s also practical. There are comfortable front seats, and those two doors on the passenger side allow rear-seat riders to get in with ease. Backseat space is a bit tight, but under the hatch there’s a huge cargo area. And the Veloster Turbo manages to return up to 38 mpg on the highway.
A turbocharged Veloster opens at $22,725. Standard equipment includes leather seats, 18-inch wheels, Bluetooth connectivity, a seven-inch touchscreen, and a 450-watt, eight-speaker stereo. Aside from the $1,000 automatic transmission, Hyundai bundles extras like a glass roof, backup camera, and navigation for $2,500.
