BlogsReview: Star Wars, The Complete Saga (Blu-ray)
If you can overlook George Lucas's infernal meddling, this is the best set yet.
This boxed set contains all six films, digitally re-mastered for the first time ever in high definition, plus three bonus discs including never-before-seen special features. The original trilogy benefits the most from the conversion to hi-def, with Han, Luke, and Leia popping off the screen like never before. Surprisingly, though, the prequel trilogy also gets a major upgrade; certain scenes, particularly in The Phantom Menace, hadn’t aged well even after just 12 years on the shelf, and this set remedies those problems. On older conversions to DVD and VHS, Jar Jar didn’t even look like he was on the same planet while interacting with Qui Gon and Obi-Wan early in the film. Those scenes all work seamlessly now. Purists, unfortunately, will have to make do with the many updated and enhanced scenes George Lucas has added to the original trilogy over the yearsand there are even more added to this Blu-ray set, with no option to disable them in favor of the original theatrical versions. Nevertheless, all six films look better than they ever have before, making this set a must-have for any fan.
