Ultimate Athlete 2011
Competitors converge on Chicago for MF's third annual event
This June, Men’s Fitness celebrated its third Ultimate Athlete event. Hundreds of competitors from all over the country invaded Chicago to go head to head in a series of competitions including the NFL Combine, basketball, baseball, the gut-wrenching MMA Gauntlet, and the awe-inspiring obstacle course. Contestants competed in all the events, but only the top five scores were counted.
Emcee Dave Foster and celebrity fitness trainer Jay Cardiello
The event brought the magazine to life, showcasing jaw-dropping feats of fitness and inspiring acts of sportsmanship as participants brought their A-Game while encouraging their competitors to do the same. Celebrity fitness trainer Jay Cardiello and former Miss Illinois Ashley Bond were on-site to give competitors tips, tricks, and the encouragement they needed to be at their best. Upon getting some face time and warm up sessions with Jay and Ashley, participants enjoyed free products from Powerade Zero, Optimum Nutrition, Met-Rx, Fitness Factory, and Celebrity Sweat.

This year, Chicago’s own Alex Fitch finished strong to claim the throne as the Men’s Fitness Ultimate Athlete — barely edging runner-up Steve Larson by less than half a point. Steve Larson held a strong lead for most of the day with Alex making his winning push in the closing minutes of the competition. Alex, a former Division I athlete in college, finished among the top 3 scorers in the daunting MMA Challenge and obstacle course — two stations which many competitors declared to be the most challenging.

Upon receiving a $5,000 check for earning the Men’s Fitness Ultimate Athlete title, Alex was asked what he’s going to do with his winnings. His answer—and possibly the quote of the day: “Going to spend it celebrating tonight!”
ADDITIONAL HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE TOP 5
- Chris P hurling an 83 mph fastball nailing the corner of the strikezone
- Lawrence B benching 135 lbs. for a whopping 73 reps
- Tyler R finishing among the top for the MMA Gauntlet
