If you're scrambling for stocking stuffers this weekend but worry gift cards or Groupons seem thoughtless, consider the new-ish gift-giving app Just Because. The iPhone app, which launched in September, curates deals from cool, under-the-radar startups, so you'll seem savvy—but the gifts cost one measly dollar.
Here's how it works: Founder Matt Hartman and his team cut deals with hip startups (think: Warby Parker, Jack Threads, and Birch Box) that are trying to build their customer bases. Those companies agree to sell their goods for just a buck, as long as the recipient has never bought from the company before.
The idea is that you have a handle on what your friends like, so these products land in the right customers' hands—and word of mouth will take things from there. "We're going to tell you what we think is cool and let you find the people who are going to be the best fit for it," says 30-year-old Hartman. "And then you give a dollar to send those valuable things."
How valuable are we talking? Here are a few of the hottest deals right now:
Alton Lane Give your dapper friend $50 ($25 online) toward a suit sewn just for him. "It's cool to be able to get something that really is designed just for you," Hartman says. "I think that hasn't always been accessible. Now, it's expensive, but it's accessible."
Uber This car-service app summons a black town car and driver to your door within minutes. With the app, newbies score $20 in credit for their first chauffeured ride.
Bulu Box Send one shipment of supplements from the subscription service, which normally charges $10 per month for its samples of new vitamins and sports nutrition products.
