Why the Best Man Wins
The ways to win are endless, but for me, few are more important than the competitive edge -- having it, keeping it. But just because you've got it doesn't mean you get to keep it. You and I know that. So what's the secret to your game? After the vision thing, the strategy, and the tactical stuff, I see "teammanship" topping the list. I mean brotherhood -- the power of that thing between guys when, whether I know you or you know me, we become indispensable to each other . . . just for a moment. (Climbers roped together 2,000 feet above ground on El Cap, protecting each other from free-fall, are no different from your buddy spotting you through a new one-rep max.) Partnerships like these, in all their forms, are anchored by trust, the kind I want you to have when you read and use what I'll deliver each month.
Recently, we lost one of our brothers, editor in chief Peter Sikowitz, who left the magazine to pursue some new personal bests of his own. Together, Peter and I championed the new
Men's Fitness you now hold in your hands -- for his teammanship, I am indebted. But the pursuit of a sharper competitive edge must continue, and as my tenure as editor in chief begins, so too will some evolutionary changes.
In the coming months, expect to get even more useful information on every page, from cover to cover, and with a lot more attitude. Look forward to a new monthly department, Supplements Digest: We'll serve up what works, what doesn't, and how to use what does. Cut out and keep a file of the intensified workouts. We'll keep the gut off, the abs hard, and your muscles growing even bigger than before. And we'll never slip in a soft ballad on you -- expect bold, graphic, sexy entertainment, whether about fitness, nutrition, sports, sex, or anything else important to your life.
As for my team, YOU are a part of it, which means stay in touch. My new award-winning teammates -- executive editor Adam Campbell, features editor Brian Good, fitness editor Sean Hyson, photography director Jamie Vance, and design director John Gilman -- will listen and respond on the new pages of
Men's Fitness magazine so you can attain and maintain your competitive edge, brother.
THE MF 7TH ANNUAL AMERICA'S FITTEST & FATTEST CITIES, 2005
I have traveled to all 50 states; to most, several times. Through my eyes, America can be the land of the fittest. We have a long way to go, but as Americans, who can achieve damn near anything, I know we will get there. But talk is cheap. That's why, this year, in addition to
identifying the fittest and fattest locales, I will join
Men's Fitness on an epic cross-country tour with one message: WE CAN and WE WILL champion a fitter nation. Stay tuned!
