Ask Men's Fitness: Is Cracking Your Knuckles Really That Terrible For You?

Is cracking your knuckles really that terrible for you?

Countless people believe that too much knuckle cracking leads to arthritis. But truth is, evidence for a connection between those obnoxious pops and late-in-life pain is fairly scant. One California doctor even conducted his own 60-year study on the effects of knuckle cracking, using himself as the test subject.

In his report, published in the medical journal Arthritis & Rheumatism, he claimed that he’d “cracked the knuckles of his left hand...36,500 times, while those on the right cracked rarely and spontaneously.” What happened after 50 years? Nothing. No arthritis—or any other ailment—in either hand.
