After taking on Men’s Fitness cover star Henry Cavill’s Superman while defending Gotham City as Batman, Ben Affleck is ready for a turn as a bad guy.

In Live by Night, Affleck’s latest film, the Oscar winner directs and stars in a Prohibition-era noir narrative rife with booze-running antiheroes, bulletstorm gun battles, and—of course—plenty of dapper mobsters wearing fancy fedoras and suspenders. (Affleck also wrote the screenplay.)

The film, based on the award-winning crime novel by Dennis Lehane, follows Affleck’s Joe Coughlin as he chases the American dream in the 1920s and 1930s. As the son of a Boston police captain, Coughlin works the other side of the law, going from small-time crimes to national-scale bootlegging after heading south from Boston to Tampa, Florida.

Affleck serves double duty alongside a stacked cast that includes Fast 8 star Scott Eastwood, Guardians of the Galaxy actress Zoe Saldana, the sultry Sienna Miller (Foxcatcher and American Sniper), as well as Chris Messina (also of Argo), Brendan Gleeson (In the Heart of the Sea) and fellow Oscar winner Chris Cooper (Adaptation, American Beauty). Affleck has also tapped much of the production team that crafted Argo.

Affleck has a ridiculously busy slate: In addition to Live By Night, he's donning a new Batman suit in Justice League and his solo Batman film—where he’ll face off against the villain Deathstroke, played by former Men’s Fitness cover star Joe Manganiello.

Live By Night opens just in time for Christmas on December 25, 2016 before going nationwide on January 13, 2017.
