Marvel has just dropped a fresh piece of concept art for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 that features a similar, but slightly altered, clan from the original.
Front and center, of course, is former Men's Fitness cover guy Chris Pratt as Star-Lord. The main character is flanked by his usual accomplices—Drax (Dave Bautista), Groot (Vin Diesel), Gamora (Zoe Saldana), Rocket (Bradley Cooper), Yondu (Michael Rooker), and Nebula (Karen Gillan).
But there's also one new face: Mantis, a half-Vietnamese martial arts grandmaster familiar to die-hard fans of the Guardians comic books, who will be portrayed by Pom Klementieff. The French actress's previous work came in Spike Lee's Oldboy, a remake of a South Korean thriller.
Guardians' executive producer Jonathan Schwartz hinted toward Mantis's relationship within the clan, telling to Entertainment Weekly that “Everything she learns about dealing with people, she learns from the Guardians of the Galaxy, which is a very weird group to learn your social intricacies from.”
Another change within the Guardians is a significantly shrunken Groot. "He’s a younger Groot and a more rambunctious Groot," Schwartz told EW. "The question is, is he the same Groot, just smaller? Or is he a different Groot that’s sprung up from the seed of the first Groot?”
The movie's director, James Gunn, also linked to the art by illustrator Andy Park on his Facebook page:
You can expect Marvel's next big reveal at San Diego’s Comic-Con International, where they are slated to unveil a group portrait of the Guardians. Keep an eye out for more hints as the flick nears its release date on May 5, 2017.
