Dwayne Johnson to Star as the World’s First Superhero in 'Doc Savage' Movie

The 'Man of Bronze'—a classic combination of James Bond, Indiana Jones, and Superman—gets a modern-day rebirth.

Dwayne Johnson never rests—not even on Memorial Day weekend.

Being The Rock Is Exhausting and Utterly Epic >>>

The hardest-working man in Hollywood added another film to his ever-growing slate of projects: Doc Savage, in which he'll play the title character which will be helmed by Iron Man 3 and The Predator director Shane Black.

It's OFFICIAL: For all comic book fans you already know the world's first superhero (pre-dating Superman) is the "Man of Bronze" himself Clark "Doc" Savage. Want to thank my bud director/writer Shane Black and his writing team Anthony Bagarozzi and Chuck Mondry for flying in from LA and sitting with me and our @sevenbucksprod's producer @hhgarcia41 on this Memorial Day weekend to chop up creative and break story on this very cool project. Comic book fans around the world know that the cool thing about "Doc" Savage is that he's the inspiration for Superman. First name Clark, called "Man of Bronze", retreats to his "Fortress of Solitude" in the Arctic etc etc. Doc was physically and mentally trained from birth by his father and a team of scientists to become the perfect human specimen with a genius level intellect. His heightened senses are beyond comprehension. He can even identify a women's perfume from half a mile away. He is literally the master of everything. But here's the #1 reason I'm excited to become Doc Savage.. HE'S A F*CKING HILARIOUS WEIRDO! Confidently, yet innocently he has zero social graces whatsoever due to his upbringing so every interaction he has with someone is direct, odd, often uncomfortable and amazingly hilarious. After speaking for hours w/ Shane Black I can see why the creator of Superman took only the best parts of Doc Savage and leaving the "weirdo" part behind. But to us, it's that "weirdo" part that makes Clark "Doc" Savage dope! Can't wait to sink my teeth into this one of a kind character. #ItsOfficial #WorldsFirstSuperhero #GeniusIntellect #PhysicalSpecimen #FnLoveableWeirdo #ManOfBronze #DocSavage

Savage first appeared in comic books in the 1930s and is considered by comic book historians to be the first superhero written in America, and the inspiration for Superman. Johnson announced the news in an Instagram post detailing some of the similarities between the two heroes: a physical specimen with a genius-level intellect, Savage (aka the "Man of Bronze") is a classic pulp hero trained not only in martial arts and athletic excellence but also engineering, surgery, and, presumably, kicking ass all over the damn world.

Basically, Hollywood finally dug through the archives to find a combination of James Bond, Indiana Jones, and the Man of Steel, and then they casted The Rock to play him. Brilliant.

Johnson calls Savage an “odd weirdo” that is a “one of a kind character” and ensures that the movie star will get to show off both his action-hero and comedic chops in the film.

Johnson also used the Memorial Day weekend to show off the first look at his character Luke Hobbs from the upcoming film Fast 8:

EXCLUSIVE FIRST LOOK: #HOBBS #F8 When you strip a man of all he has. All that's important to him. You force him to return to his roots.. and sometimes that's a very dangerous and twisted place. If I was going to return for another FAST & FURIOUS I wanted to come in and disrupt the franchise in a cool way that got fans fired up and their blood pumping to see a new version of Hobbs and his "Daddy's gotta go to work" mentality and set the table in a cool way for where the character goes in the future. Maybe it's a spinoff movie. Maybe it's more #FF movies. Or hell maybe Hobbs just gets on his motorcycle and rides off into the sunset never to be seen again. Either way, I've had a solid first week of shooting, good to be back with the ohana, good to work again w/ my bud and director F. Gary Gray and our home studio of UNIVERSAL, as always have been the best partners to me and my #SevenBucksProds team. Most importantly... you guys around the world will really dig this new version of the role, 'cause as we always say, disrupters dent the universe. #Hobbs #TwistedRoots #1Disrupter #1Savage #F8

Johnson posted a pic of Hobbs looking mean, jacked, and ready to brawl while sporting a long beard—and he hinted at a potential spinoff film for the character. As if Johnson hasn’t been doing enough already—Central Intelligence will be released in June, Ballers season two premieres on HBO in July, the Baywatch movie just wrapped filming—the star writes that Hobbs may show in more Fast and Furious movies, or could get a franchise all of his own.
