Nick Jonas Opens Up to Men's Fitness

Nick Jonas built an empire before he could drink a beer. Now he’s watching the carbs and in his best shape ever.

Yesterday it was announced that The Jonas Brothers may be breaking up. We interviewed the recently  ripped Nick Jonas three weeks ago about his workout routines, diet, and—incidentally—life after The Jonas Brothers, and all seemed well. Sort of. Read the interview and you be the judge.

It’s noon on a clear Friday in New York’s West Village, and, as usual, there are people everywhere. This would be fine, were I not traversing the streets with one of the few men capable of inciting a riot of rabid tweens simply by virtue of existing. Having successfully built a juggernaut of a brand (the Jonas Brothers evolved out of his solo career), carved an enviable body despite having Type-1 diabetes, and picked up Miss Universe 2012 Olivia Culpo as his girlfriend—all before his 21st birthday—the original JoBro has certainly earned his fans. Not that you count yourself among them— you’re too old for that, right? Well, here’s the thing. The more you get to know Nick Jonas, the more you’ll realize something: This guy’s pretty damn cool, and he’s just getting warmed up.

What’s it like being in a band with your brothers? Be honest!

The pro is that you have a really good support system. The con is that you're with the same people every day for a long time, which, if you’re family or not, can be a lot at times. But we all have a good relationship and actually really enjoy our time together.

You guys spend a lot of time together. Do things ever break down after a while?

My brother Joe forgets lyrics a little bit. [Laughs] There have been a lot of times when I've had to help him out onstage. The fans know the words to every song, so they can kind of help as well.

Do the younger fans ever freak you out?

We have been given some pretty bizarre things. We were given a shark.

You were given a shark?

[Laughs] Like, in a tube. A mini shark—but a real, live shark.

You’re 21 now—do you feel like it’s time to target an older crowd?

It definitely comes with challenges. There are a lot of different ways you can approach coming to maturity, but the one we took is to continue to grow with the fans and take our time with it because it'll last longer.

Speaking of growing, you’ve packed on some serious muscle. What’s your workout like?

I worked with a trainer who showed me some things that I can take with me on the road. Basically, it’s circuit training, so about six exercises, all targeting different parts of the body and then following it up with a two-minute cardio burnout. It's been a really effective workout routine for me, and it keeps it interesting.

What do you eat to stay in shape?

A lot of lean protein, and I’ve cut out most carbs.

Diabetes makes it really hard to get results like yours. How did you do it?

It’s really about just staying on top of it and managing every detail. I had to work with my doctor, making sure all my numbers were good and that I wasn't putting too much stress on my body working out as much as I was. When I work out, my blood sugar goes up. But then about an hour and a half later it drops down low. So, post-workout I would have to not only have protein to rebuild muscle but also carbs to sustain my blood sugar. So when I cut a lot of carbs out of my diet, I had to be conscious of that.

What’s been your key to success overall?

It’s about having a good team and just making sure they’ve got your back when you have a project that you’re passionate about.
