Ask any Stephen King fan what their favorite book series is, and chances are they'll say The Dark Tower.

Since the release of the first book, The Gunslinger,  in 1982, King's interdimensional fantasy sci-fi epic has engrossed legions of fans, many of whom were waiting for the inevtiable: a film series.

After years of delays (development originally started in 2007), a theatrical adaption of The Dark Tower is finally happening. It stars Idris Elba (looking as rugged as ever) as the iconic Gunslinger, with his eternal nemesis, The Man in Black, being played by Matthew McConaughey. A boy from Earth named Jake (Tom Taylor) discovers a portal to the Gunslinger's world of Mid-World, and together they work to stop The Man in Black from destroying the titular Dark Tower, and consequently all of reality. Take a look at the trailer below:

While the film is not a direct adaption of the books, it contains many of the same elements, and King himself has been involved with the production. Additionally, a TV series is currently planned in 2018 which will continue the story from the film.

The Dark Tower, starring Elba, McConaughey, and Taylor, releases nationwide on August 4, 2017.
