You’ve never seen Nikolaj Coster-Waldau quite like this.

Sure, the Game of Thrones actor has received worldwide attention and acclaim for his portrayal of Jaime Lannister on the HBO series—but his new film, Shot Caller, gives him the chance to do something completely different.

The film follows Jacob Harlon, a family man who gets locked up in prison after being behind the wheel during a fatal car accident. Once he’s inside, he has no choice but to join a prison gang for protection. In doing so, though, he gets irrevocably drawn into criminal activity behind bars.

Coster-Waldau goes through quite the transformation in this film. Just look at his facial hair:

Although Game of Thrones is his most notable role, Coster-Waldau has been working in Hollywood for more than a decade, appearing in such varied films as Black Hawk Down, Wimbledon, Kingdom of Heaven, and Oblivion, but nothing has given him the chance to show off the range that Shot Caller does.

Once Jaime Lannister hangs up his sword and golden hand, expect more interesting work from Coster-Waldau moving forward.

Shot Caller, directed and written by Ric Roman Waugh, is available on DirecTV Cinema and hits theaters on August 18.
