Tom Cruise is ready to take over the skies.

The first trailer for the 1980s-set American Made has hit the Web, showing off Cruise as Barry Seal, a real-life pilot who worked with the CIA in one of the wildest, largest covert operations in United States history. Seal runs drugs, money, and guns for the organization, getting into some pretty hairy situations along the way.

But Seal doesn’t just get wrapped up with the CIA—he ends up working with notorious drug lord Pablo Escobar, too.

The trailer combines action, explosions, and even a bit of comedy to bring Seal’s story to life, and Cruise gives the pilot the perfect amount of cockiness and charm:

The film is directed by Doug Liman, who seems to bring the best out of Cruise, much like their previous collaboration on Edge of Tomorrow (which is getting a sequel with Emily Blunt!). This time around, instead of an evil alien race, the duo takes on the CIA, government bureaucracy, money laundering, and drug cartels.

The stacked cast behind Cruise includes Domhnall Gleeson, Lola Kirke, Jesse Plemons, Jayma Mays, Sarah Wright Olsen, and Caleb Landry Jones.

American Made will hit theaters on September 29.
