The beaches of Dunkirk, France, bore witness to one of the most stunning and miraculous war evacuations in human history—and director Christopher Nolan is ready to put you right in the middle of it.

The newest trailer for Dunkirk has hit the Web, and it shows off one of the most grounded and realistic depictions of war Hollywood has seen in a long time.

Nolan’s story follows a varied group of Allied soldiers and officers—in the air through Tom Hardy’s pilot character, on the sea with Mark Rylance and Cillian Murphy, and on land via Fionn Whitehead and Harry Styles—as they try to evacuate nearly 400,000 people off the beaches of Dunkirk.

Oh yeah, did we mention they’re entirely surrounded by German forces?

Nolan has described his film as more of a character study rather than a “war film,” but the footage is still incredible:

Nolan is considered one of the most technically skilled directors in the business, and that shines through in this trailer.

The director used IMAX cameras and real planes, tanks, and boats to re-create what it felt like to be a part of the evacuation, and the production actually filmed on the beach where the evacuations took place in 1940.

After working in the world of superheroes with his Dark Knight trilogy, in the mind for Inception, and in space in Interstellar, Nolan's ready for war.

Dunkirk will hit theaters on July 21, 2017.
