If you still think meditation is something woo-woo and out there, you’re seriously missing out. On top of relieving stress, the practice can actually help ward off disease and even boost your performance in the gym! (Check out these 10 fitness and health benefits of meditation.) Any meditation is good meditation—whether you use an app (check out these three), sit quietly and focus on your breathing, or something else. But, there’s one particular type of mediation with a ton of science backing it that’s seriously popular among some of our former (and our current) Men’s Fitness cover guys. Transcendental Meditation (often simply called "TM") involves getting trained by a teacher, but it's painless, we promise. Then, you do the mantra-based meditation for 20-minutes twice a day. All you have to do is sit with your eyes closed and repeat the mantra (it's a "meaningless" word given to you when you're trained) in your head. Learn more about it here. And check out what Matt Bomer, Norman Reedus, Hugh Jackman, and Joe Manganiello have to say about it on the following slides.
“I’m a transcendental meditator. Everyday is one in which I do that, for sure,” Manganiello told us during the interview for our recent feature. “I can say that it changed me in some very big ways. So yeah I definitely recommend checking it out. I think it’s amazing.”
“Everyone needs a reset button so you can start your day without anxiety. For some people it’s running, for some it’s going to the gym. For me it’s meditation,” he said in our interview with him last fall.More recently, Bomer told us that when had a craving while “transforming” for his role in The Normal Heart, he drank tea or sucked on a sugar-free cough drop. But, he said in our interview with him for our January/February 2016 cover story that Transcendental Meditation helped him, too.
Although Reedus hasn’t taken up the practice yet—he wants to, or at least he told us so during our interview with him for our March 2016 issue. "I really want to get into transcendental meditation. People keep telling me I'd love it. I know Howard Stern does it. He says he closes his eyes in his closet for a few minutes, and it's like he's slept for three hours. That sounds amazing."
We haven’t talked to Jackman about TM ourselves, but he's a fan, according to The David Lynch Foundation. “Transcendental Meditation gives you what you need, when you need it. It’s literally changed my life. Some of the clearest ideas or epiphanies I’ve had in life happened during or after meditating. Everything becomes clear and the truth starts coming out,” Jackman told Bob Roth, David Lynch Foundation Executive Director, on Bob’s monthly SiriusXM interview series, “Success without Stress."
