Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 isn't even out yet, but it's never too early to start thinking about a sequel.
Director James Gunn confirmed that a yet-untitled Guardians 3 is in development, according to his interview with Collider posted Thursday.
"There will be a Guardians 3, that's for sure," Gunn said. "We're trying to figure it out. I'm trying to figure out what I want to do really, that's all it is."
He's also unsure whether or not he'd be directing, despite helming the last two films: "You know, I'm going to make another big movie; is it the Guardians or something else? I'm just going to figure it out over the next couple of weeks."
And if we wanted to get just a little geeky here, it's worth mentioning that a third Guardians movie would most likely take place after The Avengers: Infinity War and its currently untitled follow-up, leading into a "fourth phase" of Marvel films. Marvel has yet to disclose any details.
When asked, Gunn also implied we'll be seeing more of the Guardians in Infinity War: "You know, listen: I don't think we should overstate things that it is an Avengers movie, but the Guardians are a part of the cosmic universe, they're a part of Thanos' stories."
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 releases May 5, 2017.
