Fitbit Introduces its Most Seamless Tracker Yet: Alta
With fitness trackers, there's one point of contention nearly all men and women can agree on: They're a bit too bulky and stark for day-to-night wear. If you're more apt to throw your tracker in your gym bag post-workout than wear it to dinner with friends, Alta was made specifically with you in mind. Slim and sleek, Fitbit's latest wearable combines what you want in an accessory with what you need in a tracker.
“Fitbit Alta will turn heads as our most fashionable device yet," Fitbit CEO and co-founder James Park said in a press release. "The attractive, versatile design of this new fitness tracker fits seamlessly into daily life—from the gym to the office to a night out. Alta features the everyday tracking Fitbit is known for, along with innovative and purpose-built features that push users to do more. Paired with our large, engaged global social community, Alta is an exciting product for everyday users who are looking for a simple way to stay motivated and connected, that also fits with their personal style.”
Alta is available for $129.95 for presale today (Feb. 3) on Fitbit.com and at retailers—such as Amazon, Best Buy, Dick’s Sporting Goods, Nordstrom, Target, and The Sports Authority—starting in March 2016. 1. It Has Interchangeable Color and Material Bands
Imagined for every style and occassion, Alta comes in a variety of colors and finishes. The body is crafted in silver stainless steel, but the option for shiny gold stainless steel will be available soon, too. The quick-release feature lets you effortlessly swap bands to customize your look. You can opt for three different accessory bands:
Classic rubber wristband, available in black, blue, teal, and plum ($29.95)
Natural grain premium leather wristband, available in graphite and blush pink; camel coming soon ($59.95)
Luze hand-polished silver bangle engineered for all-day comfort; gold bangle coming later this year ($99.95)
The OLED (organic light-emitting diode) display can be awakened by tapping either corner or simply by raising your arm. This can also be personalized with a portrait or landscape clock face option—both of which will give you easy access to your daily stats and notifications (like meeting times and text messages). A single charge lasts about five days, so you'll never lose a step.
2. It Automatically Recognizes Activities by Exercise Type
There's no need to manually input an activity. Alta's equipped with SmartTrack, the exercise recognition technology that automatically tracks your workouts, so all your collective movements are credited toward your weekly goals. For example, Alta can sense and record continuous movements like walking, running, or biking, sports such as basketball and soccer, and general aerobic workout genres like cardio-kickboxing and strength training. The app and the display will also indicate your daily total step count, distance, calories burned, and active minutes
*Note: Alta is water resistant and sweatproof, not waterproof; so don't shower or swim with the band.
Alta gives you the option to set up reminders to move in an effort to reduce the amount of time you spend sitting, which can help keep your metabolism revved and reduce the harmful effects of prolonged down time. You'll receive short, positive prompts that encourage you to meet a step goal of 250 steps per hour. That's just two to three minutes of walking. And if you reach the goal, you'll be congratulated. The biggest caveat is you won't be harrassed or bombarded by the prompts. They can be personalized to your schedule and can easily turned off via a “Do Not Disturb” setting when you're in meetings or appointments.
4. It Helps You Smartly Surpass Sleep and Exercise Goals
Set weekly exercise and activity goals (like calories burned and active minutes) to adopt and embrace a more consistent fitness routine that works for you. These numbers will be tracked and displayed in the app on a daily basis, with a weekly goal for the number of days you plan to work out. You can even invite Fitbit friends to help keep you accountable, too; you can collectively track progress, send encouragement, and generate some friendly competition. You can also receive call, text, and calendar notifications with vibrating alerts so you can stay connected while you work out. Alta will also keep you up-to-date with your sleep quality, offering charts and stats on how often you wake up, how long you're restless, and how much sleep you're actually getting for a comprehensive picture of your health.
