Urbanears Plattan Headphones Review

Headphones are nothing new, but over- and on-ear ‘phones have never been as popular as they are right now. The Swedish-designed Urbanears Plattan is a lightweight, versatile alternative to the more expensive noise-cancelling models on the market. Whether you’re moving weight or pounding the pavement, blasting your favorite tunes is a sure way to crank up the intensity in any workout, and the Plattan will get you there in style.

Basics

Frequency responses show that the Plattan performs well with bass—we were pleasantly blown away—albeit with a comparatively weak treble response. Still, smartphone and Blackberry users will be happy with the in-line microphone that is compatible with the standard 3.5 mm jack, and a Zound plug on the right earphone that enables audio to be shared instantly with anyone who has headphones.

The Feel

On the Road
Designed for a tight fit, the headphones do well to stay in place while running on both asphalt and the treadmill.

With the Weights
If you listen to music on a smartphone while you work out, the Plattan enables you to take a call during your set, hang up, and resume playing music without touching your phone. The lightweight construction of the Plattan keeps the headphones in place during body weight movements like push-ups.

The Look

There’s no question that the Plattan is geared more toward the style-conscious crowd. It’s available in 13 different colors, all of which feature a 47-inch tangle-resistant fabric cord so you can get to your music without delay.

Durability/Construction

The headphones collapse in an intuitive manner, with the cups folding in to make them more portable. A button near the microphone plays and pauses songs and is also used to receive, end, and mute calls. Metal hinges adjust the size of the headphones, which have a padded plastic headband for extra comfort.

The Downsides

When you first start using the Plattan, you may get that “I need to take these off and let my ears relax for a second” feeling—they’re a bit on the tight side. Also, unless you step up to the Plattan Plus, you still have to use your device to adjust the volume of your music.

The Verdict

Active guys, including travelers, will find the Plattan, in their color of choice, to be very efficient, delivering on both sound and style. Listeners of bass-heavy music like hip-hop and dubstep will get plenty of boom for their buck from these headphones.
