Vaughn Gittin, Jr. and The 2010 Mustang GT

From guest blogger Amanda Amann (MF's Auto Babe)

Last fall, Ford unveiled its new 2010 Mustang GT at the 2008 LA Auto Show. The highly-anticipated pony features a muscular 310 hp V8 and a 0-to-60 time of 5.2 seconds. The GT also comes equipped with Ford's patented Advance Trac Electronic Stability Control, which assists in traction control both on and off the track. Of course, all of those goodies look great on paper, but the real question is: How does it drive? We turned to legendary drifter Vaughn "JR" Gittin, Jr. for the answer.

With an abundance of horses under the GT's elongated hood, it's no surprise the modern classic packs a hearty punch. However, to get the full muscle car experience, JR took me for a spin around Los Angeles in his modified GT.

Vaughn's GT, with a supercharged 400 hp engine and 400 ft-lbs of torque, was clearly impressive, rocketing to 95 mph across a vacant parking lot. This was far better than any amusement park ride - it was perfection.

The $10,000 modification bundle package on JR's 'stang includes a supercharger kit, replacement H- pipe and mufflers, front and rear sta-bar, dampers, increased spring rates, GT 500 wheels, performance tires and brakes.

For those of you who aren't familiar with the sport, JR is a self-taught drifter who went from practicing in Glen Burnie, Md. industrial parks to drifting in Osaka, Tokyo. Recently, JR excelled to the "Great 8" round of the Formula Drifting Grand Prix in Long Beach, Ca., where he and Team NuFormz Mopar/BFGoodrich Tires driver Samuel Hubinette (who placed 2nd) battled it out. JR lost to Hubinette and placed 6th overall, tied with three other drivers.

With 62 points, he is heading into the next competition, which will be held at Road Atlanta in Braselton, Ga. on May 8-9.

As for fitness, JR admits, "It's not about endurance, it's more about your mental, your focus, and controlling your breathing." His training regimen consists of breathing exercises, brain integrations, core, and eye exercises.
