And we welcome our first gridiron star to the list. Unitas may not have earned as much as his modern day contemporaries but his story is just as tragic. After repeatedly failing in his various investments, the NFL Hall of Famer and Baltimore Colts great filed for bankruptcy in 1991 and his debts were still outstanding when he passed away in 2002. The resulting legal issues would carry on for more than a decade after his death. Rest in peace, “Johnny U.”
