Standing at an imposing 6’3” and weighing in at 285 pounds of pure muscle, Allen Bailey easily caught the eye of every NFL scout when he became eligible for this year’s draft. But long before he was selected by the Kansas City Chiefs, the hulking defensive end was raised on a strange diet that would turn him into a physical specimen — and a figure of disbelief amongst his teammates.
"Raccoon has a good flavor,” the former Miami Hurricane told Yahoo!.“It tastes like nothing else.”
Growing up on Sapelo Island off the coast of Georgia, Bailey was introduced to a style of cuisine uncommon to most Americans, but popular in his little community called Hog Hammock. From raccoon to armadillo to possum, these unique recipes have been handed down through generations, dating back to the slaves who were brought to the island by a rich plantation owner in the 1800s.
“It's home cooking," Bailey said of the various marsupials he enjoys eating.
The big man might have some trouble finding these dishes in his new home of Kansas City, but hopefully it won’t stunt his game.
