The Fit 5: Real Talk With Reggie Bush

MF cools down after a workout with NFL running back Reggie Bush and gets his thoughts on life, fitness, family, and his new gig.

Things in life may be changing dramatically for Reggie Bush—last month, the 28-year-old tailback signed on as a free agent with the Detroit Lions and fathered a daughter, Briseis—but some things still remain the same. The man is the living embodiment of fitness and hard work.

Lucky for us, we got to see him in action during a workout session at Boom Fitness in NYC where he showed off MISSION's EnduraCool collection—a new instant cooling system for athletes that's also endorsed by Miami Heat star Dwyayne Wade and new French Open champ Serena Williams. Bush, who works boxing and mixed martial arts into his off-the-field training, threw some jabs, crosses, and hooks with a roomful of reporters looking on and trying to keep up.

It wasn't nearly as intense as the training sessions Bush undoubtedly puts in as he prepares to team up with Calvin Johnson and Matthew Stafford in Detroit, but he humored us as we all sweated alongside him. And when he was done, the gushing new dad spent time fielding questions about his life, his family, and his latest opportunity, a signing even Barry Sanders, the greatest Lions back of all time, said he "loved."


MF: What would you say is the biggest challenge you've faced in your professional career and how have you found a way to overcome it?

RB: I think my biggest professional challenge has been wanting to win a Super Bowl—wanting to be great. Some of the best athletes, they never felt like they were great. They always felt like they had something to prove. I want to be great so I’m always pushing myself to be bigger, faster, and stronger in all aspects of my game. Challenges are going to come and go. It’s a part of life. I don’t care what you’re doing, you’re going to be challenged in some way, shape or form. In order to deal it’s about staying grounded and believing in myself and the morals, values, and work ethic that got me to where I’m at now. I'm also a big believer in taking it one day at a time. Because that's all you can do, just take it one day at a time.

MF: You talked about that quest to be great and now you have this opportunity with the Detroit Lions. Could you tell us about that opportunity and where you think you fit in?

RB:  I don’t think there’s a better situation that I could have fallen into than with the Detroit Lions. With the style of offense they run, I think I fit into their system perfectly. I’m looking forward to winning a lot of football games, scoring a lot of points. It’s a spread-open offense, it’s wide open so I don’t think there’s ever going to be a dull moment. It's going to be a fun, exciting offense to watch with a lot of big plays, a lot of points. Having a great core of receivers [Calvin Johnson broke the single-season record, set by Jerry Rice, for receiving years with 1,964 in the 2012 season] and having a really good quarterback [Matthew Stafford] that’s dangerous, it opens it up for me. It goes hand-in-hand.

MF: One of the most important things when playing any sport is staying healthy. What are some of your keys to staying injury-free?

RB: You know what? In football, there’s a 100% injury rate. It’s not a matter of if you’ll get injured, it’s when. Sure, you’re always trying to do things to prevent injuries, whether that’s seeing a chiropractor or massage therapist, icing different body parts, stretching, working out, and getting stronger. But when you do get injured I think the best thing is to try and come back even stronger. Try to mentally stay focused and not fall off the deep end. For athletes, our self-confidence is crucial, and when you chip away at that, that’s when you can kind of waver. Getting injured is a huge blow to our ego.  Always try to stay focused, stay as positive as possible, and always feel like you have something to prove.

MF: How would you define fitness?

RB: Fitness is, for me, the key to living a long life. It’s the cure-all. When you’re healthy and you’re in shape you’re putting years on your life. You only get one body so you have to take care of it. Fitness—it’s the key.

MF: What can you tell us about being a new dad?

RB: It’s amazing. It’s scary. You’re happy. You’re nervous. You’re excited. Every feeling possible runs through your body, especially when you’re having your first one. I don’t care what age you are, there’s never a perfect time to have a child. You can always find excuses for why you should wait. But it happened and I feel like it happened at the right time for the right reason, so it’s really a beautiful thing. Being a dad keeps me grounded.
