Getting A New Look

THE MF OVERHAUL
If it were up to you, you'd never stray from your favorite pair of beat-up jeans and college football T-shirt. But they won't always fly with your girlfriend, or the office dress code. And if you don't have some backup duds, you've got a problem. The solution: Get more options in your closet, without abandoning what feels comfortable.

To help you, we're presenting the second installment in our MF Overhaul series-a sequence of strategies designed to make you as successful in your life outside the gym as you've been inside it. Last February, we transformed one fit couple's basement into the ultimate home gym. This time we've focused on style and grooming. After getting to the bottom of the mountain of readers' letters we received asking for help, we settled on Seth Hill, a 24-year-old student at the University of Washington, Tacoma.

Hill wrote in telling us how he'd recently lost 85 pounds by working out and eating right. He'd been heavy most of his life, hiding behind baggy shirts and jeans, and now that he'd worked out and built the body, he needed some help finding the right clothes to fit it properly. "My weight loss has given me a boost of self-confidence," Hill wrote, "and I think I need a new look to go along with it." After checking out his current wardrobe, we readily agreed, and a few months later, Hill was in our New York office meeting with our style experts.

READERS COMMENTS:

Ok, let's get real here. I love this magazine but am sick an tired of the one sided outlook when it comes to men's fashion. Are you kidding me? $230 for a pair of jeans, another $230 for the shoes, and $495 for a bag. What the hell are you guys thinking? That's my paycheck for 3 items that I probably won't put on. Why is it that when you give tips on fashion you suggest these very punk or retro looks or something that you could only use if you lived north of I don't know, say the United States? I'm fom Miami, Fl. It's hot down south for most of the year. Maybe I missed the one's where you did give some different tips and if so, I apologize but I'm sorry, there are more readers than the one's that you normally cater to. The fashion tips seem to look the same and consist of the same type of things. Again, I love this magazine and will continue reading no matter what changes are made (or not made), but please, can you be a little more versitile in the styles that you present? Oh, and maybe just a little more realistic in their prices?
-- Leon Miami, Fl

We're not all movie stars and celebrities. Leon is right, these clothes are way too expenisive for some of us. Not every man who reads this is loaded with cash. Some of us go to school, have people to take care of and so on. I like MF a lot, I really do, I just wish the the fashion piece could apply to me as well, financially speaking.

i have to agree. im sick of reading about paying ridiculous amounts of money for clothes in order to look good. its all about leaving your comfort zone. go a size tighter with a shirt and jeans.
-- Anonymous

I have to agree with the previous comment. Your fashion section is a lot of help but I would think that the target audience for Men's Fitness could not go out and buy some of the items that you feature. They are just way too expensive.
-- -Shawn

no doubt, get real
-- hwapitiman

Agreed. I'd like to see a regular column about affordable fashions. I'd rather spend my cash on electronics and other stuff that I really appreciate. Maybe they get too much free stuff from the top brands to write realistic articles for the common guy.
-- Max

I agree with what everyone above is saying. But to echo Leon, i dont prefer the punk rock look either (actually, to me thisis kinda metro-sexual) so i would definitely prefer something a bit more 'masculine' and 'affordable' to put together. No offense to anyone who likes to dress like that either.
-- uziacan

While it should be recognized that the magazine needs to support its advertisers, the previous responders are correct: your average guy isn't going to spend $230 on jeans. Lee, Levi's, and Wrangler have proven products that look good under $70.
-- Rich

I think MF should do a special style issue of stuff you can buy at Target. Plenty of things to choose from there, and for a guy who'll be 40 next year, fairly stylish.
-- Patrick

Great idea, they could feature clothes from stores regular guys shop at like Target, JC Penneys, and Kohls.
-- Tony

I don't mind you showing jeans, shoes, shirts and bags for $200-$800. In addition, you should show where we could get that same look for 60-70% less than what hollwood is paying for. I also love this mag, but who is your target when you list these clothes and prices? NOT the common working man or student.
-- Omar

WHY CAN'T YOU PEOPLE TAKE A HINT , of course only a minority of people can afford these acctual items , but the rest of us are supposed to just get an idea of what we should looking for on our next trip to target or macy's
