Stop Craving

Everyone gets them, those tiny little cravings that grow and grow until you've just got to have that carton of Rocky Road, bag of salty chips or slab of marbled steak. But, the next time you feel one coming on, fight it with one of these tips:

  • Retrain your palate. Many doctors say that if you gradually cut down on fatty, salty and sugary foods, you'll begin to desire them less, not more. Remember it doesn't have to be a drastic change. Try keeping a supply of more healthful snacks nearby to substitute with, like low-sodium pretzels for potato chips.
  • Beware of the day's end. Combating cravings requires extra care in the late afternoon and early evening, when you're tired. Your blood sugar may be low and your brains supply of mood-brightening chemicals depleted. This is when a healthful snack can keep you from an overindulgent food fix.
  • Wait out your craving. Unbelievable but true. Nutritionists have found that if you hold off from eating something for even 10 or 15 minutes, the craving will go away, or at least diminish in intensity.

On occasion, if you do give in, savor each mouthful and remind yourself what a special treat you're getting. You'll feel more satisfied--usually with less--and that, in itself, is good for you.
