It's true. You really are what you eat. And that's why some days you end up feeling more like a cream-filled Twinkie than the lean cut of beef you aspire to.
But you probably already know that. That's why, like all of us, you're most likely trying to clean up your act and start eating healthy. But the truth is, that's just not enough. Because if you're gorging yourself on apples, bananas, and salads made with iceberg lettuce, you may be eating healthy-but you're not eating smart.
In order to build the body you want-the thunderous arms and the rock-hard abs, the lightning-quick brain and the unquenchable libido-you need to make every bite of food you put in your mouth count. That means building your diet around the most potent, nutrient-dense, disease-fighting, muscle-growing foods around.
But where do you start? And what foods are the absolute fittest? To find out, we decided to put some of the nation's top nutritionists to the test. First, we polled 40 of the country's most respected food experts-registered dietitians, college nutrition professors, and authors-asking them each: What are the 10 most important foods every guy should include in his diet for maximum fitness? Then, as the results rolled in, we ranked our experts' recommendations. The more often foods appeared in the survey results, and the higher those foods' position on the list, the more overall points they were awarded.
Which foods made the list? How much of each should you eat on a weekly basis? How much fitter can your diet get? Read on to find out.
20 Turkey Breast
72 calories per 3-oz serving
Eat 3 servings per week
Buy it skinless and you get seven grams of muscle-building protein per ounce. Turkey is high in B vitamins, zinc (a known booster of sperm production), and the cancer fighter selenium. "It's also got a ton of amino acids, and there are little or no saturated fats," says Elizabeth Ward, M.S., R.D., a nutritionist in Reading, Mass. "Plus, it's one of the most versatile cuts of meat around, so you can easily eat it throughout the week and never have the same thing twice."
19 Olive Oil
119 calories per tbsp
Eat 2 tbsp per day
Olive oil is rich in good monounsaturated fat, making it an ideal food for heart health. In fact, studies show that replacing two tablespoons of saturated fat (found in butter and lard) with monounsaturated fat may reduce the risk of heart disease. But that's not the only reason to eat it. A study in the journal Nature reports that olive oil also has potent anti-inflammatory properties, meaning it can help reduce pain and swelling just like a dose of ibuprofen. In addition to cooking with olive oil and using it as a dressing for your salad, you can get even more in your diet by mixing a tablespoon or two into your daily protein shake.
18 Quinoa
318 calories per half cup
Eat 2-3 servings per week
Chances are you may not be familiar with this exotic whole grain grown in the Andes mountains. But you should be. It has a light, mild flavor-making it ideal for guys who hate other whole grains. Even better, it's higher in protein than any other grain around, and packs a hefty dose of heart-healthy. unsaturated fats. "Quinoa is also a great source of fiber and B vitamins," says Christopher Mohr, Ph.D., R.D. a professor of nutrition at the University of Louisville.
17 Black Beans
227 calories per cup
Eat 2 servings per week
Tiny as they are, beans can help you feel energized and fuller longer than almost anything else you can eat. The reason is twofold: They're incredibly high in fiber, which swells in your stomach and promotes a feeling of fullness. And, they're stuffed with a highly complex form of carbohydrate that can take your body a long while to convert into energy. Like meat, they're also packed with protein. But unlike meat, they've got no saturated fats. "Beans of all types are always high on most nutritionists' lists," says Chicago-based nutritionist Jennifer R. Bathgate, R.D. So why'd our experts pick the black variety? Easy. Ounce for ounce, they have more fiber per serving than any other member of the legume family.
16 Green Tea
2 calories per cup
drink 1-3 cups per day
From cancer prevention to weight loss to potentially slowing the development of Alzheimer's, green tea has been shown to help fight almost every major medical ill. "Hot or cold, there's almost nothing better you can drink," says Mohr. Not the teabagging type? Try buying a liquid extract. Drop a bit in water and voila! Instant tea.
I notice bonless-skinless chicken breast is left off the list. I always thought chicken was better for you than beef...
-- johnson
GOOD FOODS!!!!
-- Nader Handelih
yes, no chicken breast?
-- Shreyas
Uh....where's the chicken breast? It's only been the #1 staple in bodybuilding and fat loss diets for, oh, about 40 some years. And for good reason - it's the leanest source of protein available. No excuse for missing that, but, otherwise, the list is okay. Grade = C-
P.S. I can't believe you could forget a boneless, skinless chicken breast.
-- Nick P.
I prefer turkey breast over chicken anytime............ it missed the list for a reason.
-- Michael B.
I agree with everyone on the chicken breast being left out. I buy the 2 oz. frozen chicken breast in a bag of 16. Each serving is only 2 grams of fat, 0 grams of carbs, and 12 grams of protein. It's lean, it's clean, and it's delicious. Although the healthy foods list here is great, chicken deserves a place too.
-- HM
How about the tuna???? Tuna does wonders and its packed with protein..... is it not??
-- Hector T.
Salmon 3-4 servings per week? Are you nuts? What about all the mercury in salmon? 2 servings tops, per week.
-- David from the Boogie Down
bodybuilding isn't healthy, you sweet filthpiece. ergo, what is good for bodybuilding may not be nutritious
-- bodybuilders are smart
You have to make sure that the Salmon you eat is Alaskan or Wild and NOT farm grown. Farm grown salmon are fattier (not the good kind), contain less omega 3's and contain chemicals to make the salmon look pink when it is normally grey. Google farm grown salmon for more info.
-- Cortez
Boneless chicken breast and Tuna. Need to be added, both great for adding muscle and losing weight!!
-- Anthony V Lansing, MI
turkey,tuna,chicken......wh wrote this list?!?!
-- Anonymous
Well, I think the list was excellent although I have always heard that chicken is the way to go. I am absolutely shocked regarding the beef try it all and see what works for you.
-- John Wooden, Jr.
This is worth living by.
-- Lee
Salmon indeed! Plenty here in Alaska!
-- Marley
interesting list...but you left out the ben and jerry's chocolate chip cookie dough...mmm
-- nick c LI
I totally agree with the Salmon. For the protein and omega-3s alone. As far as Mercury, its not such a big worry because salmon is also high in selenium - which has been shown in recent studies to counteract mercury's toxicity. Its no coincidence that Icelanders eat the most fish and have the longest life expectancy. So basically........ EAT MORE FISH!!!!
-- Brian from NJ
EVERYBODY CLEARLY LIKES THEIR BONELESS CHICKEN hahaha that's some good eats!
-- LeorB.
I agree about the chicken and tuna, though I beleive beef and salmon are important for the reasons listed. I eat a can of tuna almost after every workout. A can of tuna in water not oil and with no toppings contains about 23 grams of protein and hardly any fat. Chicken is also lean with pleanty of protein and can be prepaired in various ways so to never get boring. Thanks for the list though, it was helpful and I learned alot.
-- nate
Chicken is not the leanest meat out there for you, if you would look you can buy extra lean turkey cutlets that come in at 5 cutlets = 112 grams of protein and a mere 2.5 grams off fat. That is a full plate for only 472.5 calories.
-- Chris

What could you recommend for us who dont access to any of this becuase we are stationed in Iraq right now?
-- Robert
Why is everyone still excited about finding the lowest-fat meat out there, like chicken or turkey tits? The idea that lowfat diets are good for anything is so 80s and 90s - it's been thoroughly discredited for everything including weight loss and heart health. Omega 3, soy oil, nut oils .... much tastier and more heart-healthy and more satisfying than lowfat. By the way, if you want a fish higher than salmon in omega 3 with no mercury, try sardines packed in water.
-- Superman
I've been buying canned chicken and tuna because I can't get enough of it. I eat a few cans a day and a bunch of cubed peaches/mangos or whatever. Is this a good diet? I'm not much of a cook so I like to just open a can of something or a jar and eat it out of the container. Any tips?
-- Justin
the article is one of the best guides i have read about eating the right foods. The PROBLEM is i can only print the first two pages, HELP!
-- Ronald
i always thought that fresh fruit was very good 4 u, like blueberries and raspberries, i make myself a fruit smoothie every morning, it has blueberries, raspberries, bananas and kiwi n it with orange juice as a base....
-- peace-man
Like previous posts - what's up with no chicken/tuna?
MensFitness, make with the explanation!
-- Peter
the problem is that when most people go out for a steak at outback or whatever, the steak they get is much larger than 3 oz, sometimes even 8 times larger. while it may taste delicious it is packed full of saturated fats, cholesterol and calories which arent good for you.
and Ronald, copy and paste it onto a word doccument or appleworks.
-- Alex
I just seems like denial at this point by nutritionists that they still suggest that tuna and salmon are great health foods. The truth today is that mercury pollution of our oceans has grown to alarming proportions. And that eating tuna and salmon regularly has and will cause high levels of mercury in people and that poisoning far out weighs the health benefits of fish. Eggs have Omega 3 and heavy protein content and do not contain mercury. The state of California is currently suing tuna manufacturers to force them to put a warning on canned tuna and salmon to reflect recent 10 year studies of high mercury levels in people who consume fresh water and deep ocean fish. Maybe Men's Fitness should watch the PBS documentary aired in the past year about the SIGNIFICANT danger of tuna and salmon. Stream and river fisherman who eat their catch were tested and found to have mercury levels 7 times normal. We can't just igmore the facts because we don't like the news. I love tuna and salmon, but for the same reason people are starting to remove mercury fillings from their mouth due to leaching mercury, we have to stop eating polluted fish that swim all day filtering the mercury from our oceans and passing it up the food chain. Mercury wreaks havoc on our health - - and yes, I do know someone who ate tuna regularly who had Parkinson- type symptons, and after his Doctor told him to cut back the tuna, his symptoms disapppeared. And a little boy who ate tuna daily, and was basically Autistic, and was attending a special needs program for first grade. And after testing him for metals, and finding high Mercury, they cut out the tuna and fish he was eating and today he is in third grade in a regular public school and doing great.
We still talk about ocean fish as if it were 1975. Well, in 2006 the fish are dying to tell us something . . . . .
-- Gerry
it is a gd list but chicken should be there not so sure about beef i guess in moderation tuna should be there too
-- roy
i can honestly say, i've never eaten salmon, nor any type of fish...where's the chicken
-- bob
all u guys suck, iam 15 and have a bigger cheast than all of you.
-- david
Holla at your chicken breast. I am eating some right now!
-- Drizzagon
Good Job!!
-- Joe
you guys forgot tuna....besides the mercury there is sooooo much protein
-- josh
I do like smoked chicken but I'm with M/F on the rest.So many things that could go with their choices. David must be a chick.
-- Hammer
how about a daily dose of shaven cunt? that does good things for my health!
-- Jerry R.
To the guy named Gerry above, with all do respect, you should not put salmon in the same cetegory as tuna. Wild Alaskan salmon has the lowest levels of mercury of almost any fish. Larger fish, such as tuna, have much larger amounts and therfore should be eaten infrequently. Wild Alaskan salmon is safe to eat everyday. Can Dr. Perricone, Dr. Weil, Dr. Hyman, Dr. Northrup, and even the only Men's Fitness all be wrong? I don't think so.
-- Adam O.
lots of good foods there here's a couple more that would be worthy of the list hemp oil and seeds and chlorella
-- david
Sigh ..... sardines from Canada or Maine have no detectable mercury and are loaded with Omega 3. Any small fish from cold ocean waters is about the same, they're at the bottom of the food chain and thus don't accumulate mercury.
-- Superman
Besides the absence of chicken on the list I was wondering how yogurt made it past low fat cottage cheese as it has less sugar and more protein per serving with the relative cultures found in dairy that help with digestion and fat burning?
-- JEFF
15 year old kid, you might have a bigger cheast than all of us, but I have a bigger chest than you.
-- Ferdo
what about protein shakes
-- david .h
Bravo, Superman! The availability of Omega-3 EFAs in mackerel, tuna and salmon is no myth but neither is the prevalence of mercury and dioxins. It does depends on the source of the product, however. I do keep hearing good things about certain types of salmon, namely wild Scottish and wild Alaskan. Incidentally, I am a big 'sardine man' (paints a weird picture, huh?) because, as 'Supes' stated, they are further down the food chain and hence much less likely to take on deleterious levels of these toxins.
-- Sparrowhawk III
Great food article!
-- Aaron
I love to eat a lot of meat 8-9 inches soo good for you bro
-- --Joey
For a top ten list , I didnt see Buffalo on the list, which is a perfect meat. Has the most protein and lower in fat than turkey. And tastes like rich beef.
-- Corey
Yes what about Tuna or Trout and yes Chicken Breast.I also didn't see anything about Whey Protein like what you get in a protein shake.
-- Steve
its a gd list hope it will help me out but i agree with the others. . . . . wheres the chicken breasts?
-- tim
Chicken is high protein low fat but it doesn't have any "medicinal" like properties like the other foods in the list.
-- Garrett
Very good list! Tuna & Chicken Breat not really a big deal We all know it's mainly protein, but little or no vitimans and minerals. This is very close to my shopping list today. This affirms I am on the right track. In addition to the list, Wild Black Berries are heavily studies in Cancer Research and is showing promising results with a high concentration extract. Consider picking some on your next vacation, but watch out for bears they love them too.
-- Jerry
has anyone tried boiling porkchops--i believe when cooked this way and trimmed of the fat it is an excellent nean meat
-- nobody

-- Topher

-- Saint

Shaw
-- Anonymous
I like the list, I'm gonna give it a try and see if it helps to trim my abs. I prefer turkey over chicken anyhow any day of the week. Turkey rules!!!
-- Todd
Agree totally with Superman, what the heck is up with people chasing lean / low fat meats?! Anyone who's ever picked up and read any actual reputable health book that wasn't written in 1970 knows that low-fat is a complete myth and actually harmful in the long run. RED meat, olive oil, nut oils, fish oils, WHOLE eegs, chicken & turkey WITH the skin, these are the things that'll give you real results for overall fitness and energy, instead of mediocre progress and the ILLUSION of 'clean' eating.
Very bad marks to this article for spreading this totally bogus and commercially-driven myth, but very high marks on everything else, ie the milk, berries, nuts, broccoli etc. that's all good, and for actually including beef, even though you warn against the fat content which is, again, a bogus claim.
-- Tropico
Does anyone have a daily list of what to eat for each meal and how much of it to eat?
I know some trainers tell you what to eat and that's all you get. I want maxium body fitness. If anyone has had these meals scheduled out I would appreciate a copy of it e-mailed to me. bjackson2009@insightbb.com Thanks
-- Jackson
It all depends on the results you want. Some want a chiselled body some want to fit in that pair of pants from 9th grade. It's all good info but you have to weed out what does'nt work for you. Moving and moderation are the keys.
-- Ant

Why is that there such a thing like that?
-- JMB
Most of this stuff is tasty so i don't see why some of these people are complaining.
-- Ur Deedy

-- jason
Where is the COTTAGE CHEESE!?!?!?!?!?!?!?
This stuff has only 110 calories/4.5 grams of fat......but wait it also has 13 grams of "muscle building protien"
And if you really want to test your manlyness you can buy the LOWFAT cottage cheese that has 1.5 grams of fat, and actually has 14 grams of "muscle building protien"
-- ben

Just wanted to agree with some people and disagree with others.
In order for the mercury in large fish to kill you, you would have to eat at LEAST 15 full sized Salmon each week.
and thats alot.
-- Naillik
Does anyone know about white rice versus brown rice. Is white rice so much worse to eat? I mean it tastes better and even though brown rice has a lot more fiber, does it really matter that I eat white rice. I mean I get fiber from fruits and vegetables.
-- Arsenal
I don't eat chicken, you don't have eat any meat. did you guys see picture of cows, chicken and pigs are tortured at die cruely? they are too pretty to eat, people like chop poor chicken's head, and then pull all the hair and still not enough, so peel of skin and cook flesh with sore spicy. and shit..... aaaaaaa..... it hurts...... eat vegi ..
-- BEAUTIFUL
Your language is unexpected this is the way you for your everday speaking swering?
-- kathy
I agree with the people on this board that think this list is misleading. Its really spreading myths and these foods are really suited for a particular "muscle building" excercise regimine.
I don't do as much weighlifting as before, so may of these foods are definetly not the healthiest decisions.

-- Jason INDIANA
Dont worry about the chicken and the tuna, if your smart enough to be eating chicken and tuna you dont need to see it on the top 20 list. Anybody who has the knowlegde of how to eat healthy knows tuna and chicken are better than burgers and fries. Mix it up, salmon, tuna, chicken, turkey, soy, beef you have variety and sensible choices..
-- Larry Michigan
