Taking Too Many Supplements May Increase Your Cancer Risk

If you're going above and beyond the recommended dosage of vitamins and minerals, you could be doing more harm than good.

You’ve been taking vitamins all your life, graduating from chalky Flintstones chewables to gummies to the more adult pills and capsules currently in your medicine cabinet (unless you're still taking the gummies. No judgement.) But research has found that taking more than the recommended dose of certain supplements may increase your cancer risk. Talk about a hard pill to swallow.

Researchers from the University of Colorado Cancer Center analyzed thousands of patients taking placebos and dietary supplements every day for 10 years. Results indicated that people who consumed more than the recommended dose of beta carotene supplements had an increased risk for lung cancer, while selenium supplements upped the risk for skin cancer, vitamin E elevated the risk for prostate cancer, and folic acid and B vitamin raised the risk for colon cancer, CBS reports.

Obviously supplements are essential for individuals with deficiencies and beneficial to overall health (if taken in moderation!), but you can get most of your daily requirement of vitamins and minerals from fruits and vegetables. Revamp your diet before you pop another pill. In this case, too much of a good thing may very well kill you.
