A multivitamin. It's not exotic, but it is a must for everyone who doesn't get enough fruits and vegetables. (That's you, and up to 80% of other men.) Rather than megadoses of nutrients, look for one pill that provides 100% of your daily requirements for as many different vitamins and minerals as possible. (Amounts exceeding 100% are generally a waste.) And make sure you buy a men's formula, without extra iron. Excess levels of the mineral could increase your risk of heart disease (a condition called hemachromatosis), says Doug Kalman, M.S., R.D., director of clinical research at Miami Research Associates.
Protein powder. You can get plenty of protein in your diet, but protein powder has other advantages: It's convenient and generally lower in calories than an entire "high protein" meal. Drinking a protein shake after every workout speeds muscle recovery and supplies your body with the amino acids needed for muscle growth. There are two widely used proteins: whey and casein. Whey is absorbed more quickly by the body, while casein is digested slowly-providing the body with a longer-lasting supply of muscle-building nutrients. (That's why many researchers recommend taking a mixture of the two to help sustain the release of amino acids into the blood for as long as possible.)
Creatine. This synthetic version of an energy source produced naturally in the body is stored in the muscles for use during exercise. And it works! Multiple studies show that creatine does help speed recovery and the growth of lean-muscle mass after a workout. Manufacturers used to agree that new creatine users should start with a weeklong "loading phase" of 20 grams per day; however, recent research shows that this isn't necessary, according to Chris Mohr, Ph.D., R.D., adjunct professor of nutrition at the University of Louisville. You can start taking creatine at the normal dose of three to five grams per day after a workout. (You can even mix it directly with your protein powder.)
Green tea. If we haven't beaten you over the head with the findings enough in the last year, here's a recap: Green tea fights fat. Animals who are given the extract in studies gain less weight and burn substantially more fat than animals getting a placebo. You can drink the tea-experts ideally recommend about eight glasses a day-or go the easier route and just take a supplement. (Aim for 90 milligrams three times daily.)
Fish oil. Most guys in their 20s and 30s aren't thinking about their hearts. But if you have a family history of heart disease, you ought to start thinking about fish oil, the best protection available against the disease. Experts recommend taking at least one to two grams a day. Be aware: This is not the time to scrimp and save money. Cheap fish-oil supplements taste like fish and can leave you hiccuping herring all day. Higherquality brands are more expensive, but they have much less of a fishy taste. There are literally thousands of pills you could be taking at any one time. Forget them. These are the five every guy should be taking in order to fight disease, counteract bad genes, and simply live as long as possible.
ive read that you need to cycle creatine, for how long can you take it before your body no longer produces its own. also, ive heard some buzz about no2, what is it and is it safe? is it primarily a vasilodator?

Obviously the older you are the harder it will be as your muscles take longer to heal themselves compared to that of a 20 year old. But you can still get muscle build.
A high quality creatine will help muscle growth. You will notice a difference in speed of recovery , muscle growth and energy levels (allowing you to get that last rep).

My father is 45 and stopped working out for 20 years, we work out everyday and do 2 body parts a day, we have been back atthe gym and he is one of the most in shape guys there, eat good and workout, thats all you need.

Don't get caught up in the supplement craze. I support a good multivitamin and fish oil and flax seed is great stuff too. its all about balance. Taking mass amounts of synthesized, processed protein probably isn't the best thing for your body. Same with creatine. It's a fairly new product and we dont know the long term affects of it. Also, if it isn't used properly, it can become a carcinogen. For a good protein shot, why not just down some lean turkey or chicken. Ohh, and green tea rocks.

Once you have reached your ideal size, can you stop taking creatine without loosing any muscle?

I am 22 and about to hit the police academy I am about 150 lbs and work out 4-5 times a week...I have no problem gaining the strengh yet I am lacking the muscle growth....I am currently takeing NO-EXPLODE before my workout and CELLMASS and 1-2 cans of tuna after my workout....I would love to gain 30-40 lbs, I was told that if I kept with my normal routine yet added a WEIGHT GAINER (which would provide me with a large amount of protein and carbs, MEGA MASS 4000) and add a daily AMINO ACID (gelcaps time release), I would be far more successful. I am just very confused to what to take and what not to...Any suggestions?

I am only 17 and will be 18 in 3 months. I have always been below average in height and weight. Do you think that it would be a good idea to start lifting weights and drinking protein shakes daily?
-- Jerry
I got turned on to green tea about two months ago. Thats when i started goin to the gym. Since the beging of january to now 3/12/06 ive lost 50 lbs. i do have alot to go, im 350 now and wnat to get to 250. not a bad start. I contribute a big part of the loss to green tea. of course i eat right and exersice almost everyday. I recommend green tea to all the skeptics.

I am 5 10' and weigh 165. I work out every day taking creatine and usually have a protein bar. Although I am in pretty good shape, I can never seem to loose that last bit of fat. Would you recommend taking any kind of fat lose pill to help getting a six pack?

I am 16. i have been trying to lift weights for a while but find myself lacking time to do it on schedule. i polevault for my high school. my problem is this.... i have trouble gaining muscle... all the guys in my family are really late in puberty... i pretty much just started like last year. all my friends are stronger than me and dont even lift weights...is this because they have mostly gone through puberty and had all there natural muscle growth.... should i just wait or what should i do?
-- Kyle Lofstrom
Chris, if you need to gain weight it's pretty easy. Drink a couple of high calorie, high protein blender shakes per day (whole milk, sugar, a scoop of ice cream, maybe a banana or other fruit if you like). Don't be afraid to eat red meat or cheeseburgers for a year or so until you reach your goal, then go leaner for health reasons. Snack on nuts. Remember that the usual generic advice about lowfat tofu/broccoli/fish etc doesn't apply to people who need to bulk up.
-- Van Gard
SUPPLEMENT/ VITAMIN RESPONSE: I've found according to doctors and health experts that the best brands for vitamins and supplements would be Standard Process, Energique, and Da Vinci Laboratories. These can be purchased through a healthcare provider such as Chiropractors. Moreover, the supplements most people are buying at retail stores such as GNC sell vitamins that don't allow your body to fully maximize the potential of the nutrients, but that is an entire seminar unto itself. I hope you find this information useful.

I often see advice to use expensive protein powders containing casein and whey, one protein being fast-acting and the other used more slowly - but in fact both are isolated from milk. So why not save some money and drink milk, which is more natural than protein powder? Or eat some plain yogurt if you can't tolerate milk.

I am currently 6'1ft and 350 pounds. I have been drinking TeaTech Instant Green Tea Mix 3 times a day. I have lost about 5-7 pounds. I walk 3 times a week on a dirt road and after the walk I workout with resistance bands on my upper body. I still eat regular foods (hamburgers, chicken, etc). I want to know how I can lose more weight and gain muscle. Will the protein shakes be like a meal replacement or a energy booster? Will fish oil also help me in losing weight?
-- Carl
I'm 17 years old , soon to be 18 in about 3 months. I have been working out 4-5 times a week for the past 2 years and have seen only slighty muscle growth. I have always been small but most definitely would like to change that. Are there any suggestions of the best supplement to take? Considering that fact that i have been maintaining a healthy diet and working out with no supplements whatsoever I think I am ready to try something new without harming my body.

I have taken NO2 with minimal results. My workouts where intence and I didn't get the gains I was looking for. I just started taking Gakic, and my very first time using it I noticedincrease in strength immediately. It states on the bottle exactl what it does. I love it!!!

You're still young. Just keep lifting hard. If you haven't been doing squats, start. Good form, high intensity, high reps. This will kickstart your other muscles to grow as well as having huge legs. Muscle is made of protein, so consume a lot of protein (.8 - 1 gram per pound of body weight per day), and a multi-vitamin, and stay consistent in your workouts from week to week. Also, try some ground flax seed a couple times a day. Gives you a lot of nutrients, and is pretty cheap (generally under $10 for a 6-7 week supply). Around 50 grams of complex carbs (cereal, oats, whole-grain pasta and bread) in the morning and around 100 grams after your workouts. You can go with simple carbs (gatorade, powerade, tang) before workouts for quick energy. About 60 grams of fat a day, along with your protein, and you should be on your way to getting big. Time, discipline, and intensity will get you there. And remember, solid muscle gains don't come quickly, but they do come. Hope that helps a little.

I drink green tea and take a multivitamin. I watch what I eat and I workout four days a week, twice a day. Since Jan 1st, I have lost 106 lbs. My doc says my blood looks great, and my chloresterol is at 100. He says that if I feel good to keep doing whatever it is I am doing. I am afraid of trying other suppliments.

I've spent a good part of the last two years searching for the best quality of supplements to support both physical and mental functioning, the following have proven to be the best:
90% EPA fish oil from www.mind1st.co.uk (there are very good reasons why one should avoid fish oils with DHA(docohexanoic acid) .
Pure, unflavoured, unsweetened whey protein concentrate (or whey protein isolate if money isn't a problem) from www.myprotein.co.uk (other whey protein powders contain artificial sweetners which trigger an unwarranted insulin resoponse.
ZMA - zinc and magnesium aspartate - proven in university studies to increase free and total testosterone levels - taken before bed on an empty stomach
Coenzyme Q10
Multivitamin + mineral supplement
Vitamin B supplements
Acetyl-carnitine & alpha-lipoic acid - proven to increase memory recall, overall cognitive functioning, &c. - also act as excellent antioxidants

I am currently taking NO-Xplode before my workout because I feel it gets me motivated and in the mood...for exercise that is. During my workout I drink a glass of NitroTech protein and after my workout I drink a glass of Cell-Tech creatine mix with a teaspoonful of L-Glutamine. I have gained about 8-10 lbs of lean muscle mass in the last year but am worried I may be putting too much stuff in my body that may be dangerous in the long run. I'd appreciate any comments on the subject. Thank you.

Any chance that the magazine will start actually reviewing supplements? There isn't much coverage of supplements or protein powders AT ALL anymore, and no reviews to be found.....

i have a thyroid problem which makes it hard to gain muscle and lose fat do to the fact that my motabolism has burnt out. now i do take perscription meds for it but thats not all. i put my self on my own work out plan and intake plan. in the morning i take a Tbl spoon of Flax seed oil (not the pill the oil), gluscoamine pills, multi vitamins, and 1000 mg of fish oil, with 100% whey protein. and through out the day i eat high protein meals. i gave up on fake creatin meat is a better souce of it. now for a person that has a hard time with weight management i stay around 13% body fat, for normal people this plan should help you lose more fat. but take into fact i hit the gym 8 hours a week and run 8 miles and Mt. bike 20 miles three time a week. just a thought to help anyopne out.

Seems like no one here really knows all that much about creatine. This article is quick to give it praise, but not quick to address any of the possible health issues associated with using the stuff, or the best way to take the supplement (i.e. short term, long term, cycle). If anyone can thoroughly answer any of the above questions about creatine, it would be much appreciated.
-- whattheheckiscreatine?
Creatine has been out for many years now. You can go to GNC and get a good source of creatine. When i used creatine my muscles feemed fuller, and I had a incredible pump in my arms. I didnt take it long enough to notice any long term results. There has never been any health concerns regarding creatine to my knowlege it, is a naturally occuring substance found in red meat. Creatine originaly became big when muscle media 2000 and Bill Phillips promoted it. It still is one of the best supplements out there IMO.

I just had shoulder surgery about a year ago. because of the shoulder iv had to stop lifting. I recently started back up, but i have already lost about 35 lbs. Now I need to put it back on ASAP. What would be a formula for protein intake to gain wieght?
-- Jeff
The safest supplements that give me the best results with the least amount of side-effects are as follows: Creatine Ether(10 weeks on and 2 weeks off), Whey Protein, ZMA, Multi Vitamin, Chromium, Green Tea, and Fish Oil. Anybody know of other supplements they have tried and had success with little side effects? Regular Monohydrate bloats me, and Tibulus gives me acne.
-- Aaron
In response to the NO questions, you should take your NO on an empty stomach before you work out, then go home and take a protein shake to replenish yourself..This is how NO XPLODE is maximized to it's fullest potential.
-- Adam
I found a product called Muscle-Rx in a convenience store. This stuff is amazing! I've lost 12 pounds and its all around my waist. It does heat you up a bit. I get alot more energy and my workouts are great after taking this stuff. If you can find this stuff you should give it a shot.

In response to whattheheckiscreatine?:
Most studies out there have not found a detrimental effect on renal health (as is often thought). More often it has been anecdotal accounts from doctors of athletes that have had acute renal failure and that have been taking creatine for a long time (although they often report taking other supplements and consuming a very high protein diet without adequate fluids too). There is some debate regarding potential carcinogenic risks associated with creatine intake.
When it comes to cycles or intake recommendations, it seems that you can either go for the 20g/day for ~ 5 days routine and then maintain it for ~20 days with 2 - 3g day or you can simply miss the loading phase and consume 2 - 5g day for ~30 days. Both seem to get the same results. After 5 days consuming 20g day, you excrete 90% of the creatine that you are taking in anyway. Consuming 90g CHO at the same time seems to increase creatine retention, especially in a fluid format.
The major down side to creatine is that it doesn't work for everyone. It seems to have taken on some mythical powers that, unfortunately, are not real for us all. Creatine works on roughly 30 - 50% of people, and the ones that respond best tend to be those who are low in natural creatine levels anyway (i.e., the elderly).
Hope this helps in some way

Hey, I am starting to get frustrated with looking for a good multivitamin. I have sat here for 2 hours googling about everything I could think of looking for a good mulitivitamin, but I am still as confused if not even more than when I started. If any of you guys could recommend a good multivitamin, it would be greatly appreciated.
-- Joshua
Some good multivitamins are Standard Process and Da Vinci brands.
Creatin has been known to muscle growth, but with more of a bloated feeling.
If you want size(bulk) use Leukic and Anator together. Remember that you need carbs.
If you want that shreded look, Ripped Fuel and Hydroxycut is the way to go, cut carbs.. eat more vegetables grains and lots of tuna and green tea.
IMPORTANT!! You cannot do them at the same time, do one then other. Remember they work for companies and are just trying to make a sell. If you like the info. I will be having a web site soon that will give answers to anything regarding exercise and nutrition.

Hello there I have a question to ask you. I workout four to five times a week , and run three times a week . When I go to the gym I work out hard but I don't see a boost in my energy or my run time is not going down . Now the question I have for you is what can I take that is going to give me the energy that I need , and that going to cut me up more.
-- AdrianL Johnson
Question,
I wanted to know if you workout your chest dose your nipples get smaller or bigger.
-- James Brown
In response to all these supplement posts I just wanted to say that there is no substitute for HARD WORK. If your bustin your butt in the gym 5 days a week and really working out hard your use of supplements should be minimal. Its also important to remember that excessive use of any supplement with the exception of something like a multi vitaman could create an unhealthy reliance on the stuff
-- TrainerMatt
james brown,
your nipples will seem to get smaller, cuz your chest is gettin buff.. FOOL!
-- FF
In response to AdrianL Johnson= going to the gym if your lifting heavy weight all the time your run time may not diminish as much as you hope, it may not even drop at all, my suggestion, lift heavy one day a week (max's and such) then the other days just light weight and high rep, there your going to get cut and notice a difference in your run times.
-- BrettK
I was wondering what is the good brand of creatine and protein.
-- marc t
Its all true, I have each one of these supplements in my kitchen and use them religously every single day and have done so for years. Thanks for the refreshing information!
-- Jayson M
to all the young adults who have been posting here - don't put all of your faith into creatine and protein shakes. trainermatt is right when he says that there is no substitute for hard work, it takes years to sculpt your body into something impressive.
now, creatine isn't some wonder drug that will turn your lipids into muscle fiber overnight. basically what creatine does is pull water molecules into your muscle cells (the process is called active transport) which is why after lifting weights, your arms, chest, etc. feel tighter afterward. the purpose of creatine is to stretch out your muscle fibers with the excess water, however once you stop ingesting creatine you will lose some size that has been accumulated from the water. once the water weight is lost, you can begin training without creatine and pump blood into your stretched muscles and make lasting size gains......hope this helped everyone

To whom his may concern: I see you guys have lots of questions with weight and you fear losing your muscle mass. You are all doing the right thing first that your getting in the weight room, but you all know what they say getting strong is 10% lifting and 90% of what you eat. 2) One-A-Day Men's MultiVitamin
3) CytoSport Muscle Milk

In response to John's post, I am a 20 yr old amateur kickboxer. I used to use Kre-Alkalyn which is buffered creatine. I quit using it because I had negative side effects such as kidney pain. Even though I have no history of kidney problems and I drink plenty of water I still had issues. I had been using it long term in low doses. Even though it works great for gains I do not believe enough study and research has been put into a lot of the supplements out there. To reinforce what others have already said, nothing substitutes good old fashioned hard training. I've gotten into better shape without using creatine. I just use a multi vitamin and work hard.
-- Ryan
So, apparantly "experts" recommend 8 glasses of green tea a day? I don't think that is right. I heard 2-3 cups is enough. Between the 8 glasses of green tea and 8 glasses of water we supposedly need every day, we'd be spending all of our time peeing instead of working out.
-- Stew

For everyone taking supplements:
I recently finished a research paper dealing with the world’s craze over supplemental diets. Most importantly, supplements such as no-explode, which contain many compounds that over stimulate the sympathetic nervous system, and ravage the hearts natural function, can cause many long term effects such as anxiety, panic attacks, and depression. The list goes on of supplements that should not be taken, but people are pumping themselves with. The best advice is to consult your physician before ingesting any white powders with muscle men on the front (or lightening bolts).

Brent,
Look into a glucosamine sulfate suppplement to maintain healthy joints. By putting on that much weight in such a short period of time, tendon damage can occur as well. Don't stop working out, but consider repetition work while your body catches up.

Ha, I have a question: If you take creatine and jack off excessively (to make it sore) will it increase the penis size? It is, after all, a muscle. Thanks.

Response to Aaron,
It depends. If you jack off slow but wtih high intensity you'll be huge in no time. People who jacks off fast with no intensity really pisses me off.

I have been working out for 5 months now, I have lost 75 pounds and have shown gains in all areas. I go to the gym 6 days a week, eat right, take protein, cla, and lipo 6. I look a lot better and I feel healthy. But I still have a gut kind of, I was wondering what is the best way to get rid of it?
