Only 47% of Americans consider UV protection to be the most important factor when buying sunglasses, according to a survey conducted by the American Optometric Association. Overexposure to UV rays can lead to cataracts, macular degeneration, or even skin cancer around the eyelids. Pick shades that block out 99–100% of both UVA and UVB radiation and 75–90% of visible light.
