The Other Mushrooms
White button mushrooms are edible enough, but with more than 20 species of mushrooms available, there are other fungi ready for consumption. A perfect swap for most meat-based dishes without the fat, sodium and a fraction of the calories, mushrooms are one of the healthiest foods you can eat.

Not only are 'shrooms antioxidant- and nutrient-rich, but the fruits pack potassium and vitamin D, and just 100g of these natural fungi provide 20 percent of your daily copper and selenium requirement, and 25 percent of B vitamins, including riboflavin, niacin and biotin. Mushrooms are even found to protect against certain cancers, and research shows that mushrooms have a powerful ability to make meals more filling, which can help people avoid over-eating.

“With mushrooms, men get that meaty flavor, hearty texture and the volume of food they crave without all the extra calories and fat they don’t,” says David Grotto, RD, LDN and author of 101 Optimal Life Foods. “Best yet, it’s so simple to swap thick, juicy yet low calorie mushrooms for a portion of meat in dishes like burgers, tacos and chili. Guys score an extra serving of vegetables without compromising flavor, texture or that feeling of satisfaction.” Check out these other mushroom species and cook up.
