There’s fast, and then there’s Christian Coleman fast.

The Tennessee sprinter put his talents on display in May when he crushed John Ross’ record-setting 40-yard dash time from the NFL Scouting Combine, and he was at it again during the NCAA Outdoor Championships.

In the 100-meter semifinal race, Coleman put up a stunning 9.82-second time in the first heat, putting him into the history books with the fastest time in NCAA history. The previous mark was a 9.89-second time from Ngonidzashe Makusha in 2011.

Coleman, who was part of the 2016 Olympics 4x4 100-meter relay team in Rio, said that this new personal best is only scratching the surface of what he can do.

“The sky’s the limit as fast as I can ever run. I just wanted to come out here and make it to the final,” Coleman told USA Today. “That was the plan. I felt like I got a pretty decent start; I separated and got on top of it, and I just wanted to finish to the line and make sure I made it to the final. It felt pretty good.”

It wasn’t just significant on the college level: It was the fourth fastest time for an American in the history of the event, with Coleman slotting behind big names Tyson Gay, Justin Gatlin, and Maurice Greene on the all-time list. 

Coleman gained attention in May when the Tennessee track team posted a video of the sprinter challenging the new 40-yard dash record set by John Ross. The new Cincinnati Bengals receiver beat Chris Johnson’s 4.24 record with an amazing 4.22-second run—but Coleman did even better, clocking in with a 4.12-second dash:

Coleman has shown off his blazing speed on the big stage—could the NFL come calling in the future? He wouldn’t be the first sprinter to head into pro football: "Bullet Bob" Hayes went from sprinting at Florida A&M University and a gold medal at the 1964 Summer Olympics to catching passes for the Dallas Cowboys, eventually making it into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Could Coleman do the same? Only (record) time will tell.
