USA's 2016 Rio Olympic Gladiators: Carlin Isles

The rugby speedster combines strength work and combat training.

Age: 26
Hometown: Massillon, OH
Event: Sevens

Serious Speed Demon: Isles, a former sprinter who ran a 10.24-second 100m dash, is the fastest man in international rugby. He maintains his physique with grueling workouts, performing 100-yard bear crawls, flipping tires while carrying weights, doing 80-yard sprint repeats, and even wrestling his teammates.

His Combat Coach: Mike Friday took over the USA Sevens team, in 2014, and “basically showed us what real training was like,” Isles says. “He’s breaking us down mentally, using combat conditioning, testing our limits. Your body is like, ‘Oh, my God.’”

But It's Worth It to Not Be a Lone Sprinter: “It’s a team environment,” Isles says. “We’re all together training. You’re looking at the guy next to you. They can pick you up, and you can pick them up.”
