USA's 2016 Rio Olympic Gladiators: John Orozco

The gymnast has powered through two Achilles tendon tears.

Age: 23
Hometown: Bronx, NY

Why He Shouldn't Be Here: Orozco has overcome three potentially career-ending injuries, two of which were total tears of his right Achilles tendon, to reach his second-straight Olympiad. “[The training staff] have literally helped me keep my dreams alive,” he says.

The Power of Positive Thinking: “From this point on, I’m looking at more of an opportunity to show my tenacity, to show my hard work is paying off in terms of recovery,” he says, though his heel still hurts when he pushes hard in workouts.

Though His Next Big Routine May Surprise You: Orozco is gunning for the silver screen—again. As a child, he appeared in several episodes of Law and Order; in 2012, Gym Class Heroes featured him in their music video for The Fighter. “Acting is so much fun for me,” he says. “I can’t wait to pick it up and do it again after my gymnastics career.”
