Pool Boy: Grevers, who’s won six Olympic medals—including a gold in the 2012 100m backstroke—swims six days a week and lifts three times. His pool workout takes up to four hours. “We do a lot of breath-control stuff to trick our bodies into thinking we’ve been working really hard without tapping our muscles,” he says.

His Own Worst Enemy: He’s trying hard not to overtrain. In 2010, he'd swim for two hours, lift weights for an hour, run five miles, do a “dry land” workout, then return to the pool for 2 1/2 more hours. The plan backfired, as he underperformed at the 2010 U.S. Championship. “I looked really lean and toned, but I was too tired to swim fast,” he says.
