Sometimes, going all the way cross-court for a fiery return isn’t enough.

Sometimes, you have to go all the way into the stands.

French tennis player Nicolas Mahut found that out for himself during a match against Great Britain in the Davis Cup on Saturday, April 8.

Playing alongside partner Julien Benneteau, Mahut rushed to return a shot from British duo Dominic Inglot and Jamie Murray, but in doing so, Mahut’s momentum took him into the first row of the stands.

Naturally, the ball came right back at him on the next shot, but he was ready:

That's quite the shot—and it might rival some of these 21 astonishing tennis shots that should have been impossible to pull off.

Even though Mahut and Benneteau lost the battle for that point, they won the war that was this Davis Cup match. The duo held out for the 7-6 (9-7), 5-7, 7-5, 7-5 victory to put France into the semifinals; they will host against Serbia in September.

It also gave Mahut and tennis fans a highlight to remember forever.
