Put her in the mood with the irresistible scent of oud.

You’ve probably never heard of oud, let alone know how to pronounce it (it’s üd by the way), but it’s been around for centuries. Said to cost more than its weight in gold, oud (or Agarwood) oil is coaxed from evergreens native to Southeast Asia; once these trees have been colonized by a certain type of mold they form a dark, resinous heartwood. The process takes about a decade to complete—making oud oil exceptionally sought-after and yes, expensive.
Oud’s aroma is complex and as you may have guessed, woody, making it the perfect base for men’s cologne. Hand-selected by our style and grooming editor Barret Wertz, these 10 oud-inspired fragrances feature a myriad of essential oils from bergamot to citrus, leather to patchouli for one-of-a-kind scents that are heady, masculine and irresistible.
Impress and entice her with one of the world’s most cherished aromas this season.
In 2002, while artistic director at Yves Saint Laurent, Tom Ford pioneered the oud note with the groundbreaking M7 (also included in our round up). His namesake fragrance is a best-seller and favorite among refined men and women who love them.

“I had smelt Oud in India and the Middle East and was amazed by its powerful and unique character. For once I wanted to focus entirely on the raw material itself and the objective was to create one fragrance to capture the characteristic of Oud," founder and creative director Ben Gorham says. "In the process I found that other ingredients highlighted different aspects of this complex wood.”
Immortel Oud still has the woody profile of Agarwood, only patchouli and papyrus have been blended to bring out the wood's smokiness. Moss and tobacco leaves bring intrigue and complexity, while rosewood and incense balance the aromas for a scent that is elegant and reminiscent of amber.
