How Should a Man's Overcoat Fit?

Learn all of the stylish details of a man’s winter overcoat.

Like most men’s clothing, no garment will fit you as precisely as something that is custom-built for your body by a tailor. You may also have luck in buying a suit “off the rack” and bringing it to a quality tailor to fit to your body. But man’s overcoat, like this one from Coach, is a little more tricky and you’ll need to make a conscious effort to avoid having a jacket that fits you like that tragic pair of Jnco jeans fit you back in junior high school.

To keep you warm during the winter months, an overcoat needs to be as close to perfect for your body as can be. Too small and you won’t fit the overcoat over your clothes properly, too big and there’s potential for cold air to travel through your layers and give you the chills.

HOW DO I KNOW IF MY OVERCOAT IS THE RIGHT FIT?
Your overcoat should fit squarely on your shoulders. There should not be too much room around your chest, if there is it’s a telltale sign that your coat needs altering.

WHAT KIND OF MATERIAL IS A MAN’S OVERCOAT MADE OF?
You’ll want to make sure your men’s overcoat is made from cashmere wool. It’s extremely warm and also very masculine.

WHAT LENGTH OVERCOAT DO YOU WANT?
Picking the proper size overcoat will separate the gentleman from every other man. Full-length and ¾-length overcoats are the two typical varieties of men’s overcoat types.

WHAT IS A FULL-LENGTH MEN’S OVERCOAT?

The full-length jacket should fall just above your ankles, but be sure to monitor the bottom of the coat as snow and dirt can accumulate there during a messy winter season.

A full-length men’s overcoat is probably best worn by a man with a height advantage. A full-length overcoat will often highlight a shorter guy’s height. It’s also a classic, more old-school length.

WHAT IS A ¾-LENGTH MEN’S OVERCOAT?
A younger, more modern look for a men’s overcoat is the ¾-length look. This kind of coat should fall just above your knees. The ¾-length coat—especially with some quality alterations—should give you a more precise fit and a more confident look.

WHAT IS A DOUBLE-BREASTED MEN’S OVERCOAT?
A double-breasted overcoat will require you to place one side of the coat atop the other in order to button it closed. Double rows of buttons meeting a single row of buttonholes often mark double-breasted overcoats.

WHAT IS A SINGLE-BREASTED OVERCOAT?
You can spot a single-breasted overcoat by the narrow overlaps of buttons and buttonholes. Single-breasted men’s overcoats are practical enough that you can wear one with a T-shirt, jeans, and sneakers or atop a suit.
