From jungles to volcanoes to the ultimate surf spots, discover the surprising, less-traveled sides of our nearby neighbors to the south.
1. Rock Climb Cerro Quemado
Travel into the western highlands from Guatemala City to Quetzaltenango (Xela). Once there, look up Quetzaltrekkers, a non-profit organization that benefits children in Guatemala and Nicaragua. Quetzaltrekkers guides will take you climbing in a lava field on Cerro Quemado (Burnt Hill), a dormant volcano which was the highest point in Central America until it erupted thousands of years ago. You’ll scale volcanic dolomite full of hand and finger pockets, long vertical cracks, and aretes—the climber’s dream. All levels welcome on this full day trip. ($38; quetzaltrekkers.com)
