MF Tested: The New Gillette Fusion ProGlide Styler

This three-in-one facial hair styling tool provides a fancy—and completely useful—upgrade to your standard multi-blade razor.

You've probably been relying on your razor for years, using it—for better or worse—to shave, trim and edge away hair on your face and neck. Experience has told you that your multi-blade really wasn't designed to create clean lines or leave a short, even layer of stubble, but to really do the job right you'd have to also invest in a trimmer with interchangable guards. Who wants to deal with all that just to get a nice even shave and cleaned up sideburns?

Recognizing that guys tend to be fans of fewer products and accessories—not more—the product team at Gillette devised the first affordable three-in-one razor, trimmer and edger. The Gillette Fusion ProGlide Styler just $20, a sticker price that even the must budget-concious of men can't argue with. How well does it work? To find out, we put the product in the hands of one of our readers.

Gillette Fusion ProGlide Styler

The Basics

Let's start with trimming. The Gillette Fusion ProGlide Styler comes with a Braun-engineered Power Trimmer that has three exchangeable combs to help you achieve the precise look that you want. The trimmer is designed for maneuverability which is important for shaping your facial hair. You may need you approach your skin from a weird angle (hey, we've all been there), but despite your contortions, the trimmer will still do its job by keeping the trimming length consistent throughout your shave.

The head of the razor is fitted with thinner, finer Fusion ProGlide Power Blades, to get into all those crevices that are hard to reach with lesser razors. These do work about as well (or even a bit better) than your standard, four-blade razor, so if you're happy with how that's working for you, you won't feel like you're giving anything up to use this product.

The Precision Edging Blade that can be found on the back of the razor, and can do anything from cleaning up your chin strap to carving your team's logo on the back of your noggin'. Use it judiciously.

Tester Feedback

After reviewing the product and getting feedback from our tester, we've come to the conclusion that the Gillette Fusion ProGlide Styler is best suited for men who maintain some sort of facial hair. The reason: The Gillette Fusion ProGlide Styler is a 3-in-1 facial hair styling tool that trims evenly, shaves closely and edges accurately, which is perfect for a guy who keeps a goattee, a chinstrap, sharp sideburns, or some other intricate design. If you are just looking for something to trim your scruff, or get rid of that 5 o'clock shadow, this razor may be a little unecessarily complex for you.

Our tester found that the product was "definitely a step up from a disposable razor," but noted that men who don't need all the bells and whistles, "won't really be getting very much bang for their buck." In addition to the complexities, it is also significantly bulkier than the typical razor, which may take some time getting used to (and require extra space in your medicine cabinet).

Verdict

If you've got some complex facial and neck and neck cleanup to do on a regular basis, this product is an excellent cost-conscious fit.
