3 Secrets Personal Trainers Don't Want You to Know

Some of the little details that trainers like to keep on the DL.

Every trainer has an angle, something that sets them apart from all the rest. Some sell their "look" and "physique" while others tout their education and certifications. But a great trainer should be more than a sales pitch. We love personal trainers, especially the good ones, but after all, it's a business, and not everyone plays the game clean. Before you spend an arm and a leg on a 12-week transformation program, make sure you're guy/girl isn't pitching something fishy. Here are three secrets some of them don't want you to know:

1. ABS ARE MADE IN THE KITCHEN

Every trainer has a different method for hitting the abs hard and giving you a six-pack, but only one method really works: eating good food. Without the diet program, you won't get the results. Make sure the trainer you go with can provide you with a rundown on what to eat and when.

2. YOU CAN DO IT ON YOUR OWN

It's always great to have someone get you kick-started. Great trainers provide you with the basic knowledge of exercise movement patterns and building a routine. If you feel comfortable enough and have the motivation, don't be afraid to take on your fitness on your own.

3. SIMPLE IS BETTER

Ask any fitness model or high-profile celebrity trainer what their favorite exercises are. Ninety-nine percent of the time, they will say any of the Big Three: bench press, squat, and/or deadlift. Those three exercises are the foundation of any good fitness program, and any good trainer should have his or her clients do them regularly (barring any medical issues). There are no secret, special exercises.
