In a new study, subjects who performed back squats after 30 minutes on an elliptical couldn’t perform as many reps as when they worked legs first. “Doing a lower body endurance workout before a resistance leg workout has a negative effect ” due to muscle fatigue, says study head Jared Coburn, Ph.D. On the flip side, cardio didn’t affect bench press ability, so those can be done in any order.
For maximum reps on the back squat, save the cardio for later or another day.
