Success Story: One Year, 150 Pounds Down

Stepping on a scale and owning up to your size can be a daunting task for those of us that are on the larger size. It's even more intimidating when you've gone so far, you have to step on a scale normally used to accurately measure the massive weight of construction equipment. “I was on a job site and it had a loading dock in the back, and I saw some of the guys jumping on the scale, so when no one was looking, I jumped on,” recalls Giuseppe Mangiafico. “I saw 365, 370. What I really said to myself was 'You f*cking fat bastard. What the hell is going on?'”

But how did he get there? Starting at the age of 24, Mangiafico started eating “like crap.” He based his meals around McDonald's, greasy subs and big dinners. He’d often skip lunch as well. And his almost completely sedentary lifestyle didn’t help either. “The only exercise I got was golf on Sunday morning,” he explains. But seeing that massive number when he stepped on the scale at work, he knew he had to make a change. The very next day, Mangiafico radically overhauled his diet. “I cut out everything, the Coca-Cola, everything,” he says. “I figured, whatever I was doing, I had to cut it out. So that’s what I did, cold turkey.” It wasn’t easy, but he stuck to it. To cut the weight, he started walking two miles a day for three months, just to a park near his house and back. After that he joined a gym, hitting the weights three days a week and banging out some cardio on his off days.
Nowadays, fitness is at the forefront of everything Mangiafico does. He’s hitting the gym 10 times, minimum, each week, whether it's boxing, cardio, or weightlifting. He’s also radically overhauled his diet, basing everything around lean meats, veggies and quality carbohydrates. He snacks on protein shakes in between meals, and to keep his sanity, allows himself one cheat meal per week. “Whatever I want—burgers, pizza,” he says. “But two-and-a-half hours later, I’m clean again.” It’s paid off. Since January of last year he’s dropped over 100 pounds and his fitness level is through the roof. “I don’t feel as tired as I used to, I have more energy,” he says. “I just feel better.” He’s also getting more positive attention from people, something that has been great for his self-esteem. “If I go to bars its much easier to meet women—women that wouldn’t even give me the time of day before are calling me,” he says. “I look 30 years younger.
