MEN’S FITNESS ULTIMATE ATHLETE CONTEST
OFFICIAL RULES
NO PURCHASE NECESSARY.
- Eligibility: Men’s Fitness Ultimate Athlete Contest (the “Contest”) is open to legal residents of the fifty (50) states of the United States and the District of Columbia who are 21 years or older as of May 4, 2008. Weider Publications, LLC, (the “Sponsor”) and its managers, employees and agents, and members of the immediate family of such individuals (including spouses, parents, siblings, children and their respective spouses) and persons living in the same household with any such individuals are ineligible. Void where prohibited or restricted by law. The Contest will be held on May 4, 2008, at Wollman Rink, Central Park, New York City, New York, and attendance is required for this Contest.
- To Participate: Beginning at 12:00 p.m. EST on Sunday, May 4, 2008, attend the Contest located at Wollman Rink, Central Park, New York, New York. Entry is free. Pre-registration is not required. Each contestant is responsible for his/her own time, travel, and lodging to the event. It is up to each contestant to finish within the allotted time. Individuals that are under the age of 21 on May 4, 2008, can participate to the extent to take the challenge to test their skills, but are ineligible for the Prize. Individuals that are under the age of 21 on May 4, 2008 may attend the event and participate in the challenge to test their skills only if they are accompanied by one of their parents or legal guardian. All materials submitted become the property of Sponsor and will not be returned.
Winner Selection: One (1) winner will be selected by judges based on the following point system:
Participants must complete a minimum of 5 disciplines to be entered into the competition to become the Men’s Fitness Ultimate Athlete. Participants who complete all 8 disciplines will have their 3 lowest scores dropped from their overall total score.
Each discipline is weighted on a 100 percent scale to equalize maximum points achievable. The top score for the day is the benchmark value worth 100 percent. All scores will be calculated in comparison to the benchmark value equaling 100 percent.
Sport: Tennis
Competition: Fastest/Most Accurate Serve
Rules: Participants will be given three balls to serve. Each serve will be clocked for speed. Their fastest timed serve out of the three balls will be entered into their overall score, based on miles per hour. As a bonus, targets will be set up throughout the service box. Each target is worth 5 points. For every target hit, the participant is awarded 5 points, if the participant hits all 3 targets; they receive an additional 5 points. If participant hits a target during their fastest serve they are awarded 5 bonus points. There are 20 possible bonus points available. The target is considered hit and points are awarded when the ball goes through the target and remains in the target net. Balls that do not fully enter and remain in the target (i.e. bounce off the target or miss the net), are incomplete and no points will be awarded.
Sport: Volleyball
Competition: Accurate Serve
Rules: Participants will be given five balls to serve in 30 seconds. Participants will aim at targets located on the side of the net opposite where they are serving. Each target is worth 20 points. Each target can only be hit once to be entered into the participant’s total score. The target is considered hit and points are awarded when the ball goes through the target and is caught in the target net. Balls that bounce off the target are incomplete and points will not be awarded. As a bonus, the total time it takes the participant to complete all 5 serves will be subtracted from 30 seconds. The remaining time will compute directly into points (1 point/second) and be added to their overall event score. If time runs out before the participant is able to complete this discipline, no bonus points will be added.

Competition: Quarterback Challenge
Rules: Each participant will have five balls to throw as quickly and as accurately as possible within 30 seconds. Each target is worth a designated number of points. The participant’s overall point total is based on the accumulation of the pre-determined, designated point values from the hit targets. Each target may only be hit once. As a bonus, the total time it takes the participant to complete all 5 throws will be subtracted from 30 seconds. The remaining time will be added to their overall score. If time runs out before the participant is able to complete this skill challenge, the participant will receive 0 bonus points. The target is considered hit and points are awarded when the ball goes through the target and is caught in the net. Balls that do not fully enter and remain in the target (i.e. bounce off the target or miss the net), are incomplete and no points will be awarded.
Sport: Football
Competition: Combine (Shuttle Run, Bench Press and Standing Broad Jump)
Rules: Each participant will have 1 attempt at the shuttle run, the bench press and the broad jump.
- The shuttle run is a test of agility and speed. Each participant will be timed to see how fast they can run a designated course between 2 parallel lines. The total distance covered is 60 ft. The participant must pick up and drop a wooden block at the designated locations in order for the run to be complete. A participant will be disqualified for throwing the block to its ending location instead of placing it there.
- The bench press is a test of strength. Each participant has 60 seconds in which to see how many repetitions of 135 lbs. (for male) 65 lbs. (for female) they can lift on the bench press. Each repetition must be a full extension of the bar, from the bar starting from 1 inch above the chest to the arms fully extended.
- The standing broad jump will test leg strength and explosiveness from a standstill position. Each participant will have one attempt. The measuring point will be the part of the body touching the ground closest to the take off point.
- Each of the 3 skills within the combine will be weighted so that each skill counts as 1/3 of the participants total score for the combine. All 3 scores will be tallied up to equal the total score which will be entered into the participant’s overall score.
Sport: Basketball
Competition: Three Point Shootout
Rules: Each participant will be given 1 minute to complete as many three point shots as possible using the regulation 3 point distance. There will be 5 racks of balls of 4 balls positioned around the arch. Each basket that is made is worth 5 points. The score will be calculated by number of total baskets made times 5 points. As a bonus, the total time it takes the participant to complete all 5 racks of balls (4 balls each) will be subtracted from 1 minute. The remaining time will be added to their overall score. If time runs out before the participant is able to complete this skill challenge, no bonus points will be added.
Sport: Soccer
Competition: Target Shooting
Rules: Participants will be given five balls to shoot in 30 seconds. Each target is worth 20 points. Each target can only be hit once to be entered into the total score. The target is considered hit and points are awarded when the ball goes through the target and is caught in the net. Balls that bounce off the target are incomplete and points will not be awarded. As a bonus, if the total time taken to complete all 5 shots is less than 30 seconds, the number of seconds that remain will become points that will be added to the target shooting points. If time runs out before the participant is able to complete the skill challenge, no points will be added.
Sport: Golf
Competition: Longest Drive
Rules: Each participant will be given 3 swings to complete their longest drive in a golf simulator. A swing is considered a completed swing when the club makes contact with the ball. The farthest distance will be recorded and entered into their overall score.
Sport: Baseball
Competition: Fastest, Most Accurate Pitch
Rules: Each participant will be given 3 attempts to throw their fastest pitch. In order for the pitch to be entered into the official competition, the pitch must land in the designated strike zone. The fastest, most accurate pitch will be recorded and entered into their overall score. As a bonus, a target will be set up in the center of the strike zone. The target is worth 5 points. For every target hit, the participant is awarded 5 points, if the participant hits all 3 targets; they receive an additional 5 points. There are 20 possible bonus points available. The target is considered hit and points are awarded when the ball goes through the target and is caught in the net. Balls that bounce off the target are incomplete and points will not be awarded.
Sportsmanship
Any participant who is caught cheating, delaying competition, not competing fairly or acting disgruntled towards the judges can be disqualified from the competition in full by the judge’s discretion. Decision by the judge is final and can not be disputed.
Athlete Identification
Upon registration, every participant will receive a numbered wristband. The wristband must be worn during the entire competition. Failure to wear the wristband or attempt to transfer the wristband to someone else will result in the participant’s elimination from the Ultimate Athlete competition.
Before competing at an event, the participant will show his/her wristband to the head judge who will then record the participant’s number on an official score card. Upon completion of the event, the judge will record the athlete’s total score on the card and mark their wristband to show the event has been completed.
Each athlete will also be given a personal score card to keep track of their own scores, which competition they have remaining, and the official rules of the event.
Timing
At 12:00 PM the competition for Men’s Fitness Ultimate Athlete will commence. All competitions will remain open until 4:00 PM. At 4:00 PM all competition is halted. Any participant who is amidst competition when time expires can finish the competition and his/her score will be entered.
Each individual athlete will be responsible for the order they complete each competition. A participant may only enter their first score at each challenge to be considered and valid for the overall competition. Each competition will have a “speed lane” for first time Ultimate Athlete participants. The “speed lane” has priority. There will also be a line which is available to spectators and participants who have already entered scores into the official competition, yet still want to take part in each sport.
In the result of a timing or scoring mishap, the judge may ask a participant to repeat the competition. This will be at the sole discretion of the judge.
Protests
Participants must file protests in regards to challenge competitions immediately following the completion of the competitions.
Protests must be filed with the competition’s judge who will then contact a Head Event Judge for consideration of protest. Competition will not be put on hold while protest is being discussed and considered.
There will be a 15 minute protest period during which the Head Judges will evaluate the protest. At 15 minutes, they will make a ruling on the protest. During this 15 minute time period, the participant may continue to participate in other competitions.
Judging
Judges will have the final ruling at all competitions.
All final times will be judged to the 100th of a second. (.i.e. 01)
You must be present to win.
After competition has been halted and overall scores are tallied, participants will compete at the Baseball challenge station in the result of a tie. Each participant will be given 1 ball to throw. The participant who throws the fastest pitch will win. The pitch must land in the strike zone. The targets will not be taken into consideration during the tie-breaker. If the participants throw the pitch at the same speed, they will repeat the action until there is one clear winner.
Miscellaneous
Participants are allowed to bring their own equipment in regards to tennis, golf or baseball. Men’s Fitness will supply drivers and standard racquets for competitive use, for those athletes who decide not to bring their own equipment.
- Judges will be chosen by the Sponsor, and the judges’ decisions are final and binding in all respects relating to the Contest.
- Prizes:
One (1) GrandPrize consisting of (1) HUMMER H3 Luxury, with a standard 5-speed manual transmission. Additional options are available for purchase, including: 4-speed automatic transmission, an off-road suspension package, chrome wheels, and navigation radio. (Visit www.hummer.com to search more vehicle options. Any optional equipment requested for the vehicle will be the financial responsibility of the winner.) Approximate retail value of Grand Prize is $33,000.00. The H3 will be delivered to the nearest HUMMER dealership in the Men’s Fitness Ultimate Athlete winner’s area approximately 8 -10 weeks after the order is placed. The winner is responsible for executing all necessary paperwork and taking delivery of the vehicle directly with the dealer.The Grand Prize package does not includes taxes, insurance, personal expenses, gratuities, incidental charges or any other items not specifically described in these Official Rules, and all expenses for any of the foregoing are the sole responsibility of the prize winner. Travel expenses are not paid as part of any of the prize. No transfer, substitution or cash equivalent for any prizes will be permitted, except at the sole discretion of the Sponsor. Any remaining components of the prize will be awarded and the Sponsor’s obligation to the winners will be fulfilled, and no other additional compensation will be provided. Sponsor reserves the right to substitute prizes of equal or greater value.
- General: The Contest is governed by the laws of the State of New York. By entering, entrants/winners agree: (a) to release the Sponsor and its agents from all liability, loss or damage arising out of or relating to the participation of entrants/winners in the Contest, including with respect to their acceptance and use/misuse of the prizes; (b) to be bound by these Official Rules; (c) that the decision of the Sponsor is final and binding on all matters relating to the Contest; and (d) to the use of their names, personal information and likenesses for advertising and promotional purposes in all media worldwide (including the internet) without additional compensation, except in Tennessee and where otherwise prohibited by law. All applicable federal, state and local laws and regulations apply. Winners are responsible for all federal, state and local taxes. All winners will be issued an IRS 1099 tax form for the actual value of their prize. No responsibilities are accepted for any additional expenses, omissions, delays, re‑routing or acts of any government or authority. All winners must submit an Affidavit of Eligibility / Release of Liability / Prize Acceptance Form immediately upon being chosen. If any prize or affidavit or release is returned to Sponsor as undeliverable or if Sponsor does not receive a response from any winner within seven (7) business days of attempted notification, such winner may be disqualified and such prize will be awarded to an alternate winner. Noncompliance with these Official Rules shall result in disqualification and award of prizes to an alternate winner. By accepting prizes, winners consent that Sponsor may use the winner’s name, image (including but not limited to photographs, videos and other likenesses), biographical information and statements concerning the Contest, without compensation in connection with advertising, promotion and merchandising, and winners irrevocably grant the right to edit or modify and to publish and copyright the foregoing. Winners must also make themselves available to travel at Sponsor’s expense for promotional purposes. By accepting prizes, winners agree to hold Sponsor and its managers, employees, agents, licensees, successors and assigns, harmless from and against any and all claims and liability arising out of any and all prizes. Winners assume all liability for any injury or damage caused, or claimed to be caused, by participating in the Contest. By participating in the Contest, entrants agree to abide by and be bound by these Official Rules, and understand that the Contest results are final in all respects. By participating in the Contest, entrants agree to hold Sponsor and its managers, employees, agents, licensees, successors and assigns, harmless from and against any and all claims and liability arising out of such participation. Entrant is responsible for all online charges incurred by entrant’s internet service provider. Sponsor does not make any warranty, representation or guarantee, express or implied, in fact or in law, relative to the use of any prize, including, without limitation, quality, merchantability and fitness for a particular purpose.
- Personal Information: Any personal information that the winner or participants submit in connection with the Contest will be collected and used by the Sponsor and its authorized agents to administer the Contest and to award prizes. Participant’s personal information may also be used to send additional information about Sponsor, Sponsor’s affiliates and licensee, and each of their respective products and programs via electronic and ordinary mail. Except as set forth herein, a participant’s personal information will not be used for any other purpose and will not be shared with anyone else unless required by law.
