We like to look at beautiful people. That’s irrefutable. There are hundreds of gorgeous women who grace our TV and movie screens, but very few who make us laugh—and not just a chuckle at a one-liner here and there, like really put us in stitches throughout an entire show. Sofia Vergara is one of the rare few who does just that.
Her breakthrough role as Gloria Delgado-Pritchett on Modern Family has been so well received, her character so effervescent, that she’s been nominated for four Emmys (Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series). We can’t get enough of her hysterical antics opposite Ed O’Neill, and suspect we’ll be watching her and the rest of the cast for many more seasons.
Here are 10 more reasons to love Sofia Vergara, but we assume you already do. (Sorry, Joe Manganiello, but you knew what you were getting into).
Vergara's on-screen persona, Gloria, is the epitome of a strong woman, but Vergara herself is a survivor. In 2000, she was diagnosed with thyroid cancer. Luckily she made a full recovery after treatment. “There were no symptoms, nothing,” she says. “I got really conscious about it and educated myself. Now I do my physical twice a year.”
We obviously think Sofia Vergara is a beautiful woman. CoverGirl seemed to agree. The makeup brand liked Vergara so much, they made her a Cover Girl in 2011.
She dominates TV
Lucky for us, Vergara has appeared in multiple commercials for Diet Pepsi. And if you ask us, it's the greatest thing that's ever happened to soda. But this isn't her first time donning a bathing suit for the brand. When Vergara was just 17, she appeared in a Pepsi commercial in a bikini and let's just say she hasn't lost it...
She's a real woman
“I’ve never been into working out,” she says. “I was always very happy with what I have. When I hit 40, I started seeing things I know I didn’t have before." This was a couple years ago. Yes, she's 42. “I have bad knees,” she says. “Since I was young I couldn’t do the typical workouts that everybody does. I can’t do normal squats. I can’t run. [But] people in America are very into working out and being healthy, so I said, ‘You know what? I think it’s time for me to start doing something.’ And I did.”
She knows what she wants in a man
“Kind and funny,” she says. “He wants to be successful in something and has drive. Women always like those things. We all want that. It’s not a mystery!”
Any woman with an accent—let alone a woman capable of speaking multiple languages—is automatically a knockout. Vergara's sultry voice would make for the perfect setting on a GPS, don't you think? We would drive for hours just to hear her dole out directions.
She can laugh at herself
Sofia Vergara is hysterical, especially when paired with comedian and fellow Cover Girl Ellen DeGeneres, and especially when she doesn't mean to be. After hearing Vergara pronounce her favorite football team, the New York Giants, as the "Yiants," DeGeneres provided her with her very own jersey.
She'll be in theaters...finally!
May 8, 2015 is the day we've been waiting for: a chance to see Sofia Vergara on the big screen. It's not that we only want to see her larger than life for her looks. We're excited to see her flex her acting chops outside Modern Family. She'll star opposite Reese Witherspoon in a comedy about a by-the-book cop (Witherspoon) who tries to protect the sexy widow of a drug boss (Vergara) as they race through Texas, running from crooked cops and gunmen.
Most A-list celebrities take themselves too seriously. Not Vergara. On The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Vergara told Fallon she liked his "Lip Flip" skit and wanted to try it out herself. "You're interviewing me here, and you're doing a very good job, sometimes, but I would also like to interview myself," she said. The clip is nothing short of hysterical, honestly.
