Year Long: Phase I

Submit your YearLong Workout Questions now!

We'll start you off slow. If you're brand new to weight training or you're coming back after a several-week holiday layoff, we strongly suggest you take this period seriously, as it will lay the foundation for all the workouts to come. The goal is to develop intramuscular coordination (your central nervous system's ability to recruit muscle fibers at will) and strength endurance, and to condition your joints for the harder work to come. Make sure you pick a conservative weight to use for your sets, and pay close attention to the tempo (or lifting rhythm) that's assigned to them. These workouts are not to be done heavy.

As the program begins, you'll also start correcting muscular imbalances you may have developed in the past. We've taken the liberty of assuming that you, like the vast majority of men out there, have tight hip flexors and rounded shoulders-problems that are common for anyone who spends much of the workday sitting at a desk. To remedy these problems, which can lead to injury and prevent you from lifting heavy, this month's workout will have you doing numerous pulling exercises and lots of glute work. Once you've begun to even out the front and back sides of your body, you'll be able to get the most out of each period that follows as the year progresses.

READERS COMMENTS:

I am a great the fan of the workouts that Men's Fitness provides and I am looking forward to 2007. With as good as the T-Shirt workout worked for me, i can only imagine what my body will look like come 2008. Thank you Men's Fitness.
-- Carlo

I'm a phanomanal fan of the workout my favorite is the no t-shirt workout so I can show my six-pack abs off to the ladies when I go to italy in 2007 I want to
still have the sexiest athletic body
every single year till I'm past 100 years old!
-- Joshua Nichols

Hi, I receive your mags at my home and yes they are great, but I've notice that in past issues (maybe a year or so) there were more explained excercises in them. We would like more of that for those starting at the gym for the first time and those
re-starting after a long vacation. Thanks.
-- Marco

question do diet pills really help.? if they do which ones are the best ones.? and is thier any major health concern in the future
-- flower2000

i am a construction worker from ny and i work very long hours how can i get the energy to make it to the gym.
-- steve liguori

I recieve and read your artical, but most seem to be geared for 20-30 year olds what about the 50s? carlos
-- Carlos Sanchez

Working out is something I've always enjoyed I'm very excited to try this work out program. I was so interested that i was able to get three of my friends to start the program with me. it's going to be a fun year coming.

Hey I am in my mid 40's and I am an interesed in keeping myselfin the best shape possible. Ilove your workouts but sometimesI do not know if they cater to men in their 40's or can you provide some information on how to modify them to men in their 40's but which will still allow us to keep in our best shape possible.
-- Ralph Arthur

Dang, what's up with people leaving comments that look as if they were written by a three-year-old? Please put SOME effort into sounding semi-intelligent, not to mention older than a pre-schooler.
-- Micah

my partner gets your magazine i always find time to read im a new mother i have a six month old son i lost 14 kilo in 5 months now i way 52 kilo and i havn't looked better
-- Samantha

When I first subscribed to this magazine, it came with the Men's Fitness Ultimate Year-Long Workout (or something like that). I followed it almost religiously and wow, the results were amazing! I have been lifting for some years, but that program was so complete. I am very excited to have a new year-long routine and hope to see similar great results!

I received the March 2007 issue today and was looking forward to Phase II of the Year Long Workout. But the workout isn't even in the magazine! It just has the article talking about it, and then directs me here. Men's Fitness, where the hell is Phase II?? I bought the magazine so I could take it to the gym with me, not go on fruitless web searches trying to find it, just so I can print it out. This is awful.
-- Eric, Cincinnati

I finally found a program I can set a realistic goal to....thanks to the MF Yearlong Workout Program. I've been following Phase I and really enjoy the variety of workout plans. I'm looking forward to Phase II in a few days.
-- Rick, Michigan

I'm 37, a former fitness instructor (almost 20 years ago) & college athelete. I'm committed to getting back in 'playing shape' but I need a regimen that won't bottom out after 4-6 weeks. I'll try this one.

-- Mark, WDC

At times, some of the prescribed exercises need more explanation for doing them correctly. For instance, the Single-Leg Bridge in Workout "C" of the yearlong program. Three different body parts are moving from one picture to the next. Which ones move first, second and last?
-- JL - St. Louis

I think the variety of workouts you guys offer is amazing but for people who haven't ever lifted(The Nerds who bought the magazine to look at the women) they have know i idea how to do anything correctly.......all im saying is more pictures, and explaining, even on what exercises to pick...but thanks for the mag its great!
-- Travis-Oklahoma

Ive been working out for almost 3 years straight, and im begining to follow this year long program, so far i like the different excercises and amount of days you have to go to the gym. I like the changes it gives you. hopefully the gains will show soon.
-- Jeremy, Tallahassee

how do you get to the workl out in month #2? it's not in the magazine and I can't find the link?
-- Anonymous

Click on "Fitness" and you'll find Phase ll which is month 2. CLICK on it, dont just move the arrow over it and scroll to "workout routines" because you'll just end up here frustrated wonderinng what the damn deal is. Hope that helps.
-- Marco, Ventura Cali

Just started Phase II by doing Workout A for the first time. I wasn't following the instructions for resting 1 day between workouts in Phase I (Yeah, I know--bad idea) because I wanted to get caught up. I can tell you that 1 day's rest is a MUST with phase II. I still do cardio everyday (30 minutes on lifting days--45 on off days). I'll be increasing that to 45min/1 hour starting this week.

So far, I've lost 8-10lbs. and started to regain some muscle balance in 4 weeks time. I'm looking forward to seeing some more noticeable increases in energy and contour.

-- Mark (WDC)

hey i have two questions:

1.) what are you guys doing about calories for this program? are you eating at your BMR or above or below?

2.) what kind of stretching are you doing before the workout?

thanks guys
-- mike

hey im looking for a good, 5-6 day routine thats says exactly how and what do to. if any1 could email me 1 that'd b great
odball91@aim.com
-- bill

I would love for a Fitness Magazine to devote one column to helping guys and gals who are going to a Fitness Club and want a overview of the different machines such as Smith, Cable, Nautilus and provide levels of exercise and keep in mind that we don't have 2 hours to spend. If this is something that your magazine feels is important, you will have one more subscriber. Please don't say we need to seek a Personal Trainer, can't afford one thats why I read your magazine
-- Merritt

I've been doing the MF yearlong program for two months now and the reseults are amazing. My wife is looking for a similar program but designed for women. Anyone know where she could find a yearlong program?
-- Marc

suggestion: post the year long in a .pdf format and change a few bucks for it. That way we would have a copy to reference while we workout and we dont have to F with pasting the images in MS Word.
-- fred

i don't have half the stuff you need to do the excercises, all i have acess to is a set of weights. Please show excercises which involve basic equipment so i can work out aswell.
-- Liam

Cool. Good motivation.
-- anon

I've made it successfully through the first two weeks of Phase I - for me, that's a major accomplishment! Thanks, MF!
-- Mike
