“My god, that’s Jason Bourne.”
The first line we hear in the new trailer for the upcoming (and uncreatively titled) Jason Bourne is, presumably, what die-hard Bourne fans uttered when the very first trailer surfaced.
It's the latest look we've gotten since the first trailer emerged about two months ago—with its showcase haymaker from Matt Damon's aburdly musclebound hero. Sandwiched between gun battles, SWAT teams, and motorcycles chases—so many motorcycle chases—is the major curveball this fifth film plans to throw its fans: A deep dive into Bourne’s past, which is as much a series staple as the classic rooftop sprint.
“They said my father was killed by terrorists,” rasps a weather-beaten Bourne, over glimpses of what looks like his father's demise. “He wasn’t killed by terrorists, was he?”
So yeah, sounds like we've got our driving plotline for the next film.
A Damon is back, of course, picking up the baton from Jeremy Renner, as are his compatriots: director Paul Greengrass, who directed The Bourne Supremacy and The Bourne Ultimatum, who returns from his nearly 10-year hiatus (when he directed the Oscar-nominated Captain Phillips), as well as Julia Stiles, who will reprise her role as Nicky Parsons. But there are some new faces, too—namely Alicia Vikander, who is coming off an Oscar-winning turn of her own in The Danish Girl and a wowing performance in Ex Machina.
Jason Bourne hits theaters July 29.
