Prior to New York Rangers defeating the Philadelphia Flyers 4-1 in Thursday night's first-round opener of the NHL playoffs, the Rangers wanted to put on a show for the fans—before the game, that is. At the Beard-A-Thon, presented by Schick Hydro, the Blueshirts invited fans to get a free shave (with Schick razors) in the spirit of growing their playoff beards for charity. Former Ranger greats Rod Gilbert, Adam Graves, and Stephane Matteau signed autographs, took pictures, and posed with fans who arrived early for the game.
Also on hand were SI swimsuit models Hannah Ferguson and Jessica Perez because, well, what event isn't complete without a shave from a model? Just ask Rod Gilbert:
"I think the game's never been better than it is now," said Graves. "It's never been quicker, and the athletes have never been more skilled. Everything heightens in the playoffs. This should be a fantastic series."
"Certainly the game has changed, because there's so much attention to detail. From nutrition to rest, the focus is less on bulk and more on speed and fitness and focusing on your core and that area. Doing a lot of your weights in a balanced position and mimicking the way you play. The game in that regard has gone to new heights."
All proceeds went to the Garden of Dreams Foundation, an organization that has worked with over 250,000 children and their families, including those facing homelessness, extreme poverty, illness and foster care. Schick presented a $10,000 check to the foundation. Visit Schick Hydro to check out the MF-approved Schick Hydro 5 Groomer, and don't forget to watch the NHL playoffs.
